The Student Room Group

The Official "I have an interview" Thread!

Spelt correctly this year

As one of the international applicants has an invitation, I thought I'd start this thread slighly ahead of schedule (last years didn't start until November 19th, so home applicants - don't stress! Don't expect anything for at least another month!)

Good luck everybody!!!

EDIT: I've decided to put people up (gradually) grouped first by subject, and then possibly by college, as to who's heard back, so there'll be fewer "Any Physics/Univ people heard yet?" threads. I think I'll leave out those interviewed abroad, as that's all over and done with now anyway...

Who knows anything about Dr Katharine Grevling?

She'll be my interviewer. Just did a quick googling and from what my eyes caught, she's an adviser to women students and also either a tutor in Maths or French...
Are most interviewers friendly?

Interview's on the 12th of October!
In the e-mail it mentioned me having to study a passage "that will be used as the starting point for the interview".
What kind of passage will it be? Any idea??
Applied for Oriental Studies (Arabic).

And... Thanks Athena!

tRG- I got her too. I think she's a tutor in Law actually. Not that that really matters.

Ooo what have you applied for?

I read a bit more and saw that's she a tutor in La and not in either French nor Maths..

Me. But i'm not going to go posting on public forums about specific people!
Anyhow, I imagine they'll all be reasonably friendly in a professional-ish way - they're there to interview you & try & assess your suitability/potential for the course, not to make a new best friend.

Passage could be anything - perhaps law or oriental studies related, but possibly what it's trying to assess is more relevant if she's not an expert in your particular interests.
I had a passage based interview for one of mine, although I'm a home student - they asked me to summarise the salient points, then give my option/link it to wider knowledge & argued against my points - so knowledge assimilation/communication/critical thinking/wider reading/debate type skills.
Good idea to start the thread Athena!

I'm desperate to at least get an interview!

(Not because I could do with a nice free break away in Oxford for a couple of days  )

Shouldn't it be related to the subject that I have applied for only??

Aha I thought I recognised the name. I wouldn't say I "know" the guy, since I'm a biologist not an engineer, but I have spoken with him - he was there for the open day I went to and I needed to talk to a scientist! He's pretty amiable and approachable - no idea what he'd be like as a tutor, although all the engineers seem to be pretty balanced and coping, which to be suggests he's firm but nice

Contact them & ask if you want to try & narrow down what it'll be on/format? Just saying "a passage" doesn't guarantee anything but if you'd carried on quoting hopefully you'd see the rationale behind not worrying too much about what it's specifically about...

Although obviously you can't assume your interviewer won't have a secret passion for whatever discipline you're interested in! :p: But you could demonstrate those sorts of skills with any topic of passage & because they only said "starting point" - it could go off on a tangent anywhere anyway.
Mine was on politics - I wasn't applying for politics  but it tied in with my subject & probably helped them judge the things I mentioned as well as wider awareness.

edit - you could have a hunt for overseas interviews on the website that has profiles on?

Was it spelt wrong last year?

I really hope I get an interview!
One bad thing about the interviews: The biochemistry interviews only last a maximum of two nights #grumble#. I wanna stay longer!

AHH i have her too! mine's on 25th of Oct in Hong Kong. I applied for law..which means she'll be talking to this stuttering somebody (me) about a subject she loves. and that person would probably be a living, walking insult of it =(

aw man i can't find a picture of her on magdalen's site..yes i know i'm a freaky stalker but that's only because i feel better when i know the face of whom 'm gonna talk to. it's like i'll know how to adjust my tone and everything. haha i dunno. does anybody have suggestions to cool down this gray mess in my skull?

This may come across as stupid but.. contact whom? There are so many people whom I can contact!! The college that I have applied to's admissions office.. The person who sent me the e-mail about the interview.. or even just Dr. Grevling?

Let's pray that my dyslexia will be at it's minimum during the interview.. I get confused with so many big words sometimes!

We had to submit our application by 20th September.

The Malaysians are having their interviews NEXT WEEK. Singaporeans the week after that I think. That's why we already know we've gotten interviews.
