not really, its busy all the time anyway. I came home on the tube yesterday from about 10-11 and its still pretty packed.

I imagine the tube would be safer than, say, a bus. But all public transport is somewhat dangerous (so's walking down the street though, of course) particularly at night.

So, um, take a big stick with you.

Why would the tube be dangerous? If you're going to be mugged/raped/murdered (which is so unlikely it's really not worth worrying about), the tube is not where it's going to happen - it's going to be when you're walking home to and from the tube station or on a bus. There are CCTV cameras everywhere and if you were a criminal, you wouldn't commit a crime underground with no easy escape routes. As another poster says, it's always busy, whatever time of day it is. I've often found travelling home from gigs at nearly midnight that I have to stand up because of lack of seats. There are certain lines that are less busy late at night, but if you are concerned about being left in a carriage with just one person who looks dodgy, then just move to another carriage with more people.

Not dangerous at all.

It doesn't have to be at night its going to happen just because there may be a few more people around in the afternoon they might just walk on past it was in the paper last week i think about a mum who was attacked by her ex boyfriend(?) he held a knife to her babies throat and everyone just walked on by any one else see that?

I commuted from London at about 10-11 for close onto a year and I never got mugged once. A tramp sat next to me and had a drunken conversation with me once but thats it. Apparently Cadbury's are trying to take over the world don'tcherknow.

It's not all that dangerous, I work late shifts and take the last tube home regularly - just make sure you are in a carriage with other people, preferably near the front of the train. Don't look vulnerable and definitely don't fall asleep.
You'll be fine.

In general I'd say it's safer than a night bus, an unlicensed cab, or getting lost in a part of town you don't know.

Personally, having lived in central London for 4 years at uni I never had any safety concerns -- including walking alone through Kings Cross and Soho in the early hours of the morning. Don't be a tourist, don't be stupid, you'll be fine 99% of the time -- and the 1% could go wrong anywhere. Don't worry about the tube.

Thanks people, I guess the main reason I ask is becuase I've been approached in broad daylight a few times over the last few years, and although never been hurt or mugged ... I'm not sure how I'd be in a late night confrontation.

I'll let you know tonight how my journey went, lol

^ You know something I don't?, lol

Reply 12

It's really not very dangerous I wouldn't have thought. Depends where you're going to an extent, but generally there are a fair few people hanging around the place.

Reply 13

more dangerous? lol get a group together after 9pm and its more FUN! For instance, ever raced someone going up all the down escalators in Westminster Station without getting in anyones way? lol give it a try

Reply 14

yeah, same a friend of mine always uses the tube at those sort of times..

Becareful of nutters though - they are all over the place in London

I was on a packed tube once at like 11pm (after a concert) and some guy was arguing with his girlfiend because he thought she was having an affair - everyone was looking at them. Then this guy phones the crazy guys girlfried - He went mental-started threatening him on the phone and telling him he was gonna kill him - at the next stop he ran off the train threatening to kill the guy phoning his girlfriend - he said he was going over there now as he ran off the tube...oh and he left his girlfriend behind on the tube, lol

A bit random I know but it only takes a look wrong in the direction of one of these freaks for them to start trouble with you.

You'll get people (smelly, usually) begging for money after about 11, but otherwise the tube is really rather safe. Actually, the beggers are more on the other trains than the tube.

wesetters
I've never had trouble on the tube at all, be I travelling at 9 am or midnight.

What he said.

You're probably more likely to get into trouble walking from the station to your house or wherever you're trying to get to. Beware of drunk people late at night on the tube, but trains are long enough so that you can always get away from them.

9pm's not really late though, just be aware of the times of the last train and don't miss it!

Like I said, yes, I believe it's far less dangerous than the buses.

When does the London Underground close anyway? Up here, the Glasgow Underground closes at 11 (well, no trains start their journeys after that time) and I'm fairly sure that's designed to stop the drunks causing trouble...
