If you use 'avenir', which is probably better than 'futur', you have to say 'Dans l'avenir' instead of 'a l'avenir'

I don't know if 'à l'avenir' is correct or not, but in France no one says it..

From just quickly browsing online I understand that they can all be used in different contexts/some are outdated
But just saying, France is a big place and you can't be sure that no-one uses that phrase in the whole of the country. Maybe you mean you don't hear it where you live/visit?
