Everyone's freeview box works apart from mine :-(

i've got a normal portable aerial and gives satisfactory results, some interference but get all channels. if i buy a freeview/digital aerial will i get better reception (1to5) not bothered about freeview channels

When you say "Some interference" I'm guessing the answer here will be 'no'.

I wouldn't think so, to be honest. The only difference is is the length of the aerial, they're both metal at the end of the day. It's hard to tell really without trying if you'll get a good digital signal, but the interference you're getting suggests not (which college are you in?)
