I've just started AS also but I do Human Biology with AQA so I can't help you as such but I'd just say - don't rely on the textbook. If you haven't already, print the specification so you know exactly what they expect of you. What I started doing is I look at a chunk of the spec for my course and it will say things such as 'Must be able to define...' 'Must have some knowledge on large molecules including Proteins, Carbohydrates and Fats'. So I take this information and summarise all of the notes from the textbook which are relevant and if you feel as though the textbook, as well as being over-detailed, isn't helpful in general, there are a lot of sites which can help you. A good one is : https://www.youtube.com/user/OCRBiologyAS/videos

and you can find many others which you yourself find helpful.

Hope that helped and good luck

OCR's own text book covers most things but I always advise reading beyond it. There are no specific books for reading beyond a topic, but the internet is your friend! Two students in my class got A* at the end of A2 and they both had books that the teachers gave them so ask your teacher what may be of benefit!

Hi fellow biologist! I've had somewhat experience with studying and I've found these books really help on top of what previous people had said about studying the specification, so I would recommend you getting these (on top of studying the textbook very thoroughly):

A to Z biological sciences handbook for all definitions that you need to understand and memorise, MY MOST PRIZED POSSESION!!! :^_^:

BioZone for practise questions
http://www.amazon.co.uk/AS-Level-Bio...ocr+biology+as
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Model-Answer...ocr+biology+as

Some revision guides (get these towards the end of the year to revise, I don't recommend using these to learn new things from except the first one by frank sochacki is amazing, so colourful and concise:
