I've heard HMV will only employ people who are at least 18. No clue about Virgin megastores though.
just to warn you, it will be very difficult to get a job at either of those stores, they are very popular with job hunters, there is even a sign on the HMV closest to me specifically stating that they are not taking on, I did manage to get a Virgin application form though but never heard elt back from it

HMV = 18+ (I know this cause I work there)
Virgin - when I was little (read 'at college') they told me something about preferring uni applicants. But I swear my friend said he worked there while he was doing his A-levels.

My local HMV takes 16yrs old, I know because my friend works there. Doesn't hurt handing your CV in.

They might have an unwritten policy (a pretty discriminatory one at that) but it doesn't mean they wouldn't sometimes consider you. I have a friend who worked at HMV Oxford Street at 16 and the nearest Virgin Megastore to there at 17. I think that was mostly to do with the fact he had contacts though, which makes it a bit unfair.
well when i asked they told me you had to be 18+, but now there is that new law or whatever that says you don't have to say how old you are, to prevent discrimination..
It's probably 18 so that you can sell 18 rated DVDs. Even if you were working the stockroom or whatever it'd probably be best for them as they could easily move you to the till if they were shorted staffed or what ever but if you were 17 you wouldn’t be able to. Just a guess.
hmv is 18+
I don't know how it will work with this new Law as there is no specific reason why they couldn't take on a 17 year old (it's a different story for Pubs etc where they only sell products that can be sold to over 18s by over 18s). A 17 year old would be quite able to fill the shelves (with a couple of execptions), work in the stock room and even work on the tills (would just need to get authorisation from an Over 18 to sell 18 rated products). We'll just need to see how it goes (the same argument could be applied to many situations, it will be up the courts how they interpret the Law)
I work for Virgin, and i can clear up the confusion! The new law does mean that stores have to accept applicants from 16yrs, and you don't have to state your DOB on the aplication form. Under 18s ARE allowed to sell age resticted products according to the video recordings act, so this isn't a problem.

The only problems students may have are the number of hours you might be asked to work in balance with studies, and that you be required to work right up to and after xmas, so its no good if you're leaving uni to go home for the hols.

Check what hours the stores are looking to fill, its unlikely that they'll have weekend-only vacancies. Also, don't neccesarily expect a reply to your application as these stores get 100s, and there isn't time to contact everyone.

I hope that helps!

Thanks for the input guys.. so for HMV its 18+ and Virgin Megastores is 16+ if i'm right :P

Thanks again!
I know someone who just got a job in HMV, they were 17 but HMV did say that you could be 16, if you tell your supervisor that you are going to be on the tills, then it is alright for you to sell 18+ products.

^So it would be HMV=16+ and Virgin=16+.

What's the best way of applying for these?
Online or going in and asking if they got positions or ringing???
Going in, or just sending in your CV and cover letter. Though right now HMV are only recruiting full time xmas temps.

Its unfair that you need to have work experience. How are you supposed to get work experience if no1 will employ you without it?!

It is unfair; I feel for you because I was in the same boat, and only got the job I got now because of one person out of hundreds and hundreds giving me an opportunity (and even then, I feel like I only got employed because I'm 19 and they can pay me less than their older staff).

I'm 14 and I really want a job because I don't like relying on people. Am I old enough to even work at HMV? 😂
