Contribution to a purchase price in land law

Someone has contributed to a purchase price of land. They are asking to still claim the equitable interest after the freehold owner has sold the land. They have previously occupied the land but left for some years(e.g. 4), but is seeking to occupy it again by seeking to claim the interest. Is the new buyer of the property still bound by this interest or does the interest seeker not have an interest?
