Pubs in bath range from the "okish" to the "truly excellent". Especially if you explore off the beaten track. They range from modern pubs like Wetherspoons and The Litten Tree to old-fashioned taverns like The Ram and The Raven, the latter of which serves the best pie and chips in the country at a reasonable price.

Real Ale fans will be happy in Bath, especially at The Raven, The Green Tree and the Saracon's Head.

Further out of town both The Horseshoe at Combe Down, the Hope and Anchor at Midford and The George at bathhampton are great places to go when ur parents come to visit.

As for clubs - Bath's best club, Babylon, has apparnetly closed but there are a variety of others. All small and underground, with a range of music. Caddies is Monday night, and T's (QTs / Playground) is Thursday's entertainment. Qube and Moles are good too. For large modern clubs try Bristol!

Caddies is now Club XL, mondays were going downhill for a while before, but its now got poledancers in the upstairs room on friday. Yet to check it out but sounds good.

The main problem, and im sure this is the same throughout the country, is that fat people in too small clothes ruin the views.

Ive been into town only 3x so far, but it was very fun!! Might get boring to do same thing EVERY few days, but can always stay and drink on campus sometimes.

as a resident of this fine city for 16 years, I'd have to say that Bath has some pretty decent nightlife, but if you want some bigger clubs, bars and pubs then you have to venture to Bristol.

That said, there a few good places like Delfter Krug (opposite the theatre), the Assembly Inn (a pub in Lansdown, just round the corner from the Assembly Rooms and the Museum of Costume), the Star Inn (Walcot Street), the Pig and Fiddle (opposite the Podium shopping centre), the Crystal Palace (behind the Roman Baths), the Salamander (between Milsom Street and Queen's Square), the Porter (above Moles) and the Boater (especially in Summer, with it's beer garden next to the weir in front of Pulteney Bridge).
Places like the Huntsman and the Saracen's Head used to be OK, but they're pretty much full of chavs these days. The Huntsman is the only pub open past 11/12pm at the weekends though.

When the parents visit, I can really recommend a pub called the Wheatsheaf in the village of Combe Hay. Follow the signs for the village from the Odd Down Park & Ride. It has a really lovely terraced beer garden, and it's fantastic on a summer's evening. Homemade food and lots of real ale and draught beers. You might need to reserve though as it's popular, especially on Fridays and weekends.

How good is the Bath clubbing- pub scene?

Vis a vis Nottingham, York etc

my brother went to Nottingham Uni, and I reckon Nottingham is far better for nightlife than Bath or York. There are loads of pubs and bars and clubs there, plus they get far more live bands and groups because of Nottingham Arena.

I've only visited York once but it seemed similar to Bath nightlife-wise. I'm sure you'd have a great time as a student at any of these unis though.

Thats why were hitting bristol's gigging scene tonight! Thats the only thing about Bath, too small for bands to come to, but bristol is only 10 mins away. I read somewhere about them trying to get a venue for some bands to play at though.

Agree with Nefarious about Moles - it is quite well known on the live-music circuit.

In terms of pubs for parents... the Hope and Anchor at midford is my favourite. Good food, sunny beer garden, and nice beer (bath gem) on tap. From Wells Road turn left past St Martins Hospital, passing Tesco petrol station. Straight on at mini roundabouts down Midford hill, car park on left just before railway bridge.

The george at Bathampton is also good. A36 out of Bath towards Warminster, turn left into Bathampton and follow the road through the village, crossing the canal (signed for tollbridge to batheaston). Canalside setting (with garden next to canal) and good food.

Dont pick a uni on the nightlife....

Choose a Uni for other, more important reasons and deal with it

The nightlife in Bath is poor for a city. Good pubs and bars but there are no good clubs. Having lived in both Bath and Nottingham, Bath cant compete with Nottingham which is right up there with Manchester and Leeds for a good night out. One thing to say for Bath is there isnt much trouble.

Perfect description of Bath nightlife. The bars are great, but the clubs are not too special, although you can definately have a good night out. You shouldn't be too put off though if you are planning on coming to Bath Uni as Bristol is only 15 minutes on the train and has an excellent nightlife!

don't want to scare everyone, but Bath does still have its problems after dark. You probably shouldn't be walking the streets alone after dark - just take usual, sensible precautions. It doesn't have the gun crime of Nottingham, Birmingham and other big cities.
Have to agree about the clubs - most of them are pretty rubbish, although I like Moles the best of the lot. They have good bands there sometimes. It's what you make of the night yourself that determines if it's good or not though - you can have a good night whereever you go if you're with the right people.

I've been going out quite a lot in Bath and it is really good, the clubs aren't absolutely end of the world amazing or particularly huge but still if you have a few drinks at home, head to somewhere like Wetherspoons to start the night and then onto a club (Po Na Nas/Blue Rooms/Delfter Krug etc.) they can be great Each one has different themed nights so there's plenty of choice, and they're all within walking distance of each other. Also there's some deals for the 22,000+ students in Bath, only thing I can't tell you about is what time places close.

Definately don't walk around on your own late at night, although it's not too bad, like all cities and towns it does have it's problems.

Bath has another great advantage of everything is quite compact. Last night we started in Spoons, then alehouse, then T's - and no more than 5 mins walking at each stage.

As for T's - its a "great" club if you dont mind walls running with sweat. Oh and perhaps avoid the girls toilets after my housemate spent 2 hours in there throwing up ;-). It's cheesy in a good way, and free entry b4 11 - but the drinks are quite pricey (£4 double vodka and coke)

Just to stress I wasn't that housemate. I've just got back from The Netherlands. :p:

Yeah, would have been quite worried if you were in the girls toilets :P

Are you sure it wasn't nefarious? Perhaps it was too dark in there for you to know who you were looking after?
