Best Halls of Residence? (The Big Accommodation Choices Thread)

I'm going to say the obvious and choose Owens Park. Just because it's awesome and you will meet so many people.
I am starting to think it might be cool to go there...but which of my other choices should I substitute it with? And Clarence, you've stayed in Owen's Park right? Well, isn't it really noisy? I'm worried about all the fire alarms going off and stuff, it might drive me crazy but is it really like that?
I have stayed yes indeedy, many times.
It's noisy but it's pretty much the same as any other University i've been to.

Trust me, Owens park is immense, you WILL have a good time!
I'm in abit of a pickle about accommodation :frown:

I've pretty much no idea, with conflicting views on every block,

so, I've come to the conclusion there all great

my choices: whitworth, owens house and grosvenor place, I'm hoping the social scene is great for all these places??

So what do people get up to in Owens park that makes it stand out so much from the others??

Cheers!
Hey,

I'm hoping to come to Manchester this Sept to study french and German.
I want to be somewhere where theres good social life within the halls, preferably not far from where my lectures will be(although if i can get the bus then im not bothered) hopefully en-suite and I'm not fussed on catered or Self catered. And hopefully no vermin. And good tv reception.

Can anyone reccomend what would be best?
thanks.
Well, if you want to be near your lectures then the Victoria Park campus would probably be best but the Fallowfield campus is more sociable, I mean all your mates will probably go to Fallowfield at night cos that's where all the parties go on. It can be a drag trekking from Victoria Park to Fallowfield so in social terms I have to recommend Fallowfield, there's a bus like, every five minutes from Fallowfield to where your lectures will be so it doesn't matter that you're not really near the university.

I have only looked at catered accommodation on the open house day so I'm afraid I can't give you information on that many halls but if you're looking at the Victoria Park campus then Dalton-Ellis is good for ensuite, St Gabriel's also has nice ensuite rooms but it is all girls and it's quite 'twee'. On the Fallowfield campus then Woolton Hall is lovely (it's my first choice!) I believe that Sheavyn House also has the kinds of ensuite rooms you are looking for.

Good luck with deciding!

studying accounting and finance next year and applied for halls all around the business school  went for lambert, fairfield and wright robinson. was just wondering how good these halls were from people who may be or stayed there?
I'm thinking of going:

1) Wright Robinson
2) Grovesnor
3) Whitworth Park

But I'm also considering Canterbury Court & Oak House - any opinions?

Uni options are in the ol' Sig, and I'm not overly bothered by the social scene - while I want to have a good time & all, I don't want to forfeit a nice-ish room for a slightly better social life. Also, Self Catered is a must for me!
Yes, I'm sad :P

I have already sent out my application  now I just have to meet my offer :s-smilie:.

In order of preference:

----Hulme Hall
----Allen Hall
----Dalton-Ellis Hall

Yup, I am going catered:smile:. too much hassle for me to cook in the first year. I will end up spending way more money than is required :p:

:tee:
How important is it to fill in the "Interests, activities, achievements and positions of responsibility (e.g. cultural, sporting, gap year activities, employment etc.)" stuff? Can you change it at a later date, if you don't put something in?

I always really struggle with these type things. I'm not dull, I'm just not good at talking about myself

What did you put?

Also, how are these accom. choices looking, from honest opinions?

1. Wright Robinson
2. Whitworth Park
3. Lambert Hall

I realise that Friday night perhaps isn't the best time to ask these questions.
Thank you! xo
I've just finished my first year at Manchester and thought I may as well add my two pence:

* Oak House/Owens Park have the best social scene, and Fallowfield is basically the party area. If you want ensuite there then Sheavyn is better than Richmond apparently.
* Whitworth Park (where I am) is fantastic for proximity to uni and it's quick on the bus to town or Fallowfield. There's also a pretty good social scene but a risk of getting put in a flat with a load of foreign students. Also some of the houses haven't got sinks in the bedrooms. I personally think it's the best value for money if you want self-catered and not ensuite and I've had a really good time here!
* In Victoria Park I know St. Gabs is pretty boring but Hulme Hall is good. Though the food in all the catered places isn't that amazing.
* Accom in the city centre like Weston Hall has much less a sense of community and a lot of foreign students.

I don't have a thing against foreign students btw it's just that they're nearly all not interested in socialising outside their own nationality...and a lot of them are 2nd or 3rd years so they're even less interested in going out and stuff.

Well I put in badminton, debating, voluntary work, creative writing and as positions of authority I put in that I was the head events manager for my school for 2 years. Don't really know how important this section is. I think they wse it to try and put you with people of the same interests.

:tee:
I originally had

1.weston
2.lambert
3.whitworth

Just emailed and changed it to

1. whitworth
2. weston
3. lambert.

Really wanted ensuite as i'm quite clean/tidy and other people leaving the toilets dirty would really piss me off but from what most people say, shared isn't that bad and i'm going to have to learn to live with it anyway when it comes to sharing a house in second year...might as well get used to it now. Anyone know how likely it is to get whitworth is it's first choice?

Also, I applied in march the first time but just changed my details today, does that mean i'm still more likely to get my first choice accom or will they see my application as having been submitted in june even if i just emailed them to change the details?
Reply 194
No not really. It isn't a first come first served thing. They make all offers after results day so I don't think you will have much of a problem:smile:.

To be honest, if you're that closed-minded that you're concerned about changing places simply because of a stereotype, I'd be more worried about even the idea of going to uni than where you're staying.

So what if that's where the "rahs" stay - what does that matter? Are they worse people because they happen to seem to fit into a stereotype?

You can change if you want to, I don't even know which is better 'cause I'm not there yet, but are you really sure about changing simply because of a stereotypical group of people?

Reverse snobbery, at all?

It matters to me where the 'rahs' stay simply because i dont want to live with a load of snobby, spoilt, rich kids - because snobby isn't nice. I am not 'stereotyping' evryone who lives in these places - obviously everyone who lives there do not fit the stereotype of a 'rah' - People who are already at Manchester and have experience of halls have said that a lot of people like this tend to live there (this obviously makes sense as they are the most expensive halls) - that one idea obviously has not put me off living there altogether but along with other things, (i.e they are very expensive, so i have also questioned whether it would be wise to apply there) i thought maybe i should consider changing my application.

This isn't something i've been losing sleep over and that bothers me loads - I'm just asking ppls opinions of what impression they hav gained from these halls - im not saying im going to take ppls advice and believe every word of it.

As for being close minded, thats a silly thing to day about someone you dont know. I'm the least close minded person i know - i have friends who wud fit into many different 'stereotypes' i dont assess people according to what stereotype i think they they fit best, and i don't only want to get to know a certain type of people... i chose manchester because i wanted to meet the widest variety of ppl possible at one of the best institutions - not go to a good uni and find that when i get there, theres loads of diff ppl from all different walks - not just a load of public school kids. i dont hav a problem with public school kids - but i just dont want to end up livin with one type of ppl , espcially a type who i wont b able to identify with

Thats just how i feel - reverse snobbery? yes probably
