I'm staying at Oak House, why wouldn't you want to be in the best social area in the first year? I got a feeling it will have some role in how fast you settle into the uni and things. Also off the top of my head it is cheapest too, so thats an incentive in itself.

I've got Manchester as an Insurance - am I best applying for Acommodation anyway? Do I go through the website?

Also, a quicky - what are the best 3 halls on Oxford Road or close to - I want to go where all the fun is haha

Thanks

I Go to Manchester Uni, if you want the best time you have to live in fallowfield, its the student village a 20 min bus journey from uni, but everyone lives there. Its got a few pubs on campus, but also has loads of them locally too. Its main accomodation are Owens Park and Oak house. These are cheap and cheerfull, crap accomodation but are where its at. more up market accomoadtion, such as richmond park are avaliable. Check the brochure and aim for fallowfield if u want a good first year. most ppl move there in second year and get houses too. I reckon the city campus ppl have a good time too, but not like in fallowfield. If you want to be close to uni, which wasnt an issue for me becaus the bus service is amazing and cheap!! then city campus may suit.

I live in Fallowfield and find its a 20 minute walk away, let alone bus journey, to the uni.

This has probably been asked before, but how does Oak House differ from Owens Park (aside from catered/non-catered) - does the different styles of accomodation layout lend itself to getting to know better or is it really just the same? Are you a bit buggered in Oak House if you've got a few eejits as housemates?

Oh and I assume I'm screwed anyway for getting my first choice as I've left it this late :s-smilie:

Well obviously you are in a flat as a pose to a corridor but, from what my mates at Uni say, you will get to know everyone pretty quickly regardless. I put OH as first choice - but that was because I really want to go sc.

As for getting your first choice, as long as you apply by the deadline you have the same chance as everyone else. It isn't first come first serve - they only allocate places after your place has been confirmed.

Oak House has smaller rooms than Owens Park. Apparently they never plastered the insides of the walls of the rooms because if they were any smaller, they would have been under the legal limit of room size.

am a fun luving girl, have applied to owens park but not sure what to put for my other choices. The hulme's places seem a bit snooty, any advice?

I was in OP and loved it, and it's clearly the best one for breakfast because that runs until 11am.
you probably won't have a problem getting a place there though, but as suggestions for the rest if you want to be in fallowfield then I think Allen and Woolton are your only real options.

Woolton is NICE so has a fair few 2nd and 3rd years in, but bigger rooms than OP and nicer food (although meal times aren't as varied). People in Woolton all seem to bond really well though because they actually had hall evens going on last year, everyone I've met from there has been totally lovely.

Allen is right by OP so although it is quieter, it's not far away from the OP bar and the Bop...although if you have one of the rooms with a skylight, please bear in mind that the people on the north side of tower CAN look out and see into your room...
Hulme Hall is the best... Trust me.

Woolton and Allen Hall are probably the best, both offshoots of the Fallowfield Campus. Although Hulme Hall is a bit up itself, its still a good, social hall, but Allen Hall and Woolton Hall both have the largest undergraduate rooms and better food (according to STARS).

Do you mean Ashburne or Oak House? Because Allen is t'other side of the MMU Hollings Campus.

Presumably it is. Fallowfield is supposed to be the “drinkers heaven and the non drinkers nightmare”:p: :p: quoted from a friend studying there but that’s really over exaggerated like anything. Itt’s the student village of Manchester basically but quite a lot of people choose Victoria Park or the city centre accommodation so you really won’t be out of action anywhere. Its Manchester after all there are loads of people whichever area you choose:smile: .

Fallowfield is a bit further away from campus but they have the bus that is very punctual and quite cheap (i think:redface: , you have to ask a current student about this as I am prospective like you). A lot of people go out and drink in fallowfield. The bars are supposedly very cheap there and its also looked at as a more social place.Victoria Park is quieter than fallowfield but much closer to campus. It has its share of bars and pubs but not as famous as the ones in fallow field but don't assume that nothing goes on in Victoria Park:p:. There are plenty of social things that go on there as well. The city campus is the closest to campus but I don't really know too much about it. I just didnt like the way that the accommodation there was arranged....to me they all seemed like piled up boxes in a tall building:p:. Choose wherever that you think you will feel at home . Don't worry that much about being action packed....like i mentioned its manchester....the quietest hall there will be more action-packed than the quietest hall in most places:wink:.

:tee:
Hey, can anyone tell me when we can move into our accommodation? If Freshers' Week is the 17th I would have been planning to move in on the 16th but actually, thinking about it, it might be better to move in a tiny bit earlier than that so I can explore the city and get totally unpacked at my own pace. When can we move in and when do existing students recommend that we move in? Is the 15th probably a good idea so I've got two days to get my act together?

is the accommodation at Oak House really as bad as everyone is making out?
I don't think it is, no. I really liked Oak House, thought it was more homely than Owens Park and a bit more comfortable than Whitworth.

Maybe I just don't mind breeze blocks.

Whitworth Park is closest to the south campus (pretty much right next door to the at-the-moment-in-pieces-Academy). It's great, there's a little hill just inside the entrance that's good for socialising on and the bar is super cheap and has a great atmosphere. There's tons of halls events like fancy dress nights and trips to Amsterdam and York. The Freshers' Week was great, they had silly things like a bouncy castle and sumo suits and everyone was just getting drunk and talking *******s to each other the whole time. I guess you make friends quickly if that's how you are, but I'm very shy so I didn't make lots of friends at halls until second semester. Didn't help that me and a guy started going out in Freshers' Week and when we broke up in January I realised I'd not made any other proper friends in halls, I'd just hung out with him and his friends who he knew from home who lived there too.

But choose Whitworth, it's ace.

i fell in love with whitworth as soon as i saw it. Though on first impressions it looked more like a jail cell, i was sold when i saw the park next door. It seems like an ok place to study aswell, away from all the activity that is only a few meters away, and its convienient with the distance to the academy.

My other 2 choices were Chandos and Grovsner (sp?)

As much as i liked fallowfiled the distance to town put me of. The idea off walking that long stretch to uni in the morning was unappealing. Its pretty sorted for pubs etc and the night life is meant to be be good though.
