The buses are NOT that bad, especially if you get stagecoach (which if I'm right, is only a pound more than getting magic bus - per week). Magic bus are rank at 9am and if you're hungover having your face in someones back/face/armpit is not nice. But, if it was really that bad, the majority of first year halls wouldn't be in Fallowfield.
Try north campus (Weston, Chandos), it's quieter and you can walk to Law (Brunwick Street, Williamson Building I'd imagine the majority of the time) in about 15 mins, 10 if you walk fast.
weston looks nice...is it near night life? and is it a sociable area?

The north campus it's self isn't "sociable", because it's part of the uni. But there's a couple of bars right on it, and you're like 2 mins away from 5th Ave which is a popular student club. You're also near Canal Stret if you fancy a night out there! It also must be like a 5/10 min walk into Town where you have all the other numerous clubs. So while it's not the social hub of Fallowfield, it's not dull.

hey.
i need people's opinion on the following halls:
Weston
Lambert
Hulme

those are in my order of preference, im not so much interested in the crazy party scene that seems to be Fallowfeild - but i would still like to have quality nights and alot of fun in my first year.
I would ideally like to be in either weston or lambert as i would be based on the engineering dept - and weston is terribly close  so any general things i should know before i send my application??

I was on a dept open day yesterday and as part of it, i got to visit Whitworth Park halls of residence and i must say it wasn't really my cup of tea...

it all seemed a bit dingy and 'cell-like' and i really didn't like the communal bathroom idea with cubicles for toilets and showers... however maybe I'm just being fussy...

are there any other decent halls on the city campus with self contained bathroom and toilet/ensuite...??

Whitworth is a bit rank tbh. Too close to oxford road too.

Weston is North Campus and en-suite. Not sure of any others.
Weston looked really nice and modern when I went looking round. It seemed to have a lot of foreign students, probs because it's really close to the Uni buildings?

I dunno. Maybe.
There's a lot of international students in manchester, but north campus is quieter so that could be why, there's a lot less in Fallowfield.

That's probably the main reason :p:

They have to pay a lot more so I guess they want to study without distractions and get more for their money, as it were

hmmmm
but like
its not *dull* in the north campus is it?? :s-smilie:
I'm currently living in Weston... It's, in my experience, quite an antisocial place. The non-ensuite ones, like any of the Grosvenor group, tend to be a bit more sociable within the halls. However, Weston is really near a lot of clubs and pubs. Which attracts all the drunks.

So, no, I would not recommend Weston. It's quite new, and it has it's own bathroom (which you have to clean). That's all it's got going for it.

Sounds like your best going for the Grosvenor Group.

How come there isn't any accommodation available to undergraduates for over 40 weeks? (Or doesn't seem to be so). As some of us would actually like to stay in Manchester during summer...

Conferences (so they can rent our rooms out to large groups), and general cleaning/maintenence that would be hard to do while people were living there. You can have summer accomodation, you just need to apply for it seperately.

Ah right, I see.

And also, what weeks do the 40 weeks cover? Everything but summer?

Yes - unless your contract is for 37 weeks, in which case that doesn't cover the Easter holidays

It's all covered here (length of let section)

I don't know whether this has already been asked but I'm kind of desperate.
When you're applying for accommodation and it asks you to write what your hobbies/interests/achievements etc are, how much detail are you supposed to go into?

A simple - i enjoy doing this, that and this.
Or - I have been doing this for x numbe r of years blah blah blah.

Help would be great !
