I think this is gonna be a difficult one for you.
I will say *all* the carpets are short and my henry the hoover is really good, but my room is incredibly dusty and I clean often. There's lots of shelves and stuff for dust to collect and being in a small room it seems to get bad very quickly. I'm in Weston Hall (en suite) and I wouldn't advise it for you. Try and find one with as big a room as possible (the smaller it is the more you'll have to clean it) and a decent wndow then it's easier to air the room.
I only wanted an en suite so, if I remember correctly, that limited my options to 3 or 4. It might work out better for you if you consider sharing a bathroom to get more options regarding your room. Good Luck.

EDIT: I just read your post in full and I'll also say Weston Hall bathrooms don't have windows. They have crappy extractor fans and the steam is a *nightmare* it makes the room damp and a lot of people have silverfish running around their bathrooms.

In my case (chemistry) Manchester did interview and if you ring the accommodation office (see accommodation website for the number) they'll probably let you see most of the places you want to.
Thanks, I'll remember that.

I have a question about the shared bathroom, are they like...
i) you share an apartment type place with several others, you each have your on room. There is a shared kitchen and living room type area, and the appointment has a front door. Like in hollyoaks (ye I know university is nothing like what you see on TV)

or
ii) Toilet and shower on attached to a corridor with shared kitchen attached the corridor?

I'm not exactly sure what you're getting at but the ones I have seen have a front door that leads straight into a corridor. Off that corridor leads the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom. All straight off the corridor. Some I know of are split levelled, i.e rooms upstairs with bathroom.

There are some of both, mine for example is of the first type, but the other block nearby has corridors, so in theory anyone can walk in and use the toilets/showers

I get terrible allergic rhynitis at times so I am really particular about dust. Lived in Burkhardt house last year. Attached bathroom was OK but got steamed up loads after a hot shower. And the room window had to be left open to let out the steam if bathroom door was left open otherwise the fire alarm would go off (I had a flatmate who let the alarm go off twice in one night because of that). The rooms are pretty big. I'd say one of the biggest compared to all other halls. Closet is very small. Storage space above closet's OK. You can chuck some stuff under the bed, too. Dust wasn't an issue for me. As it got closer to the Summer though, rooms got to be quite warm so leaving the window open most of the time helped. The cleaners come in on a daily basis and I think vacuum the place up twice a week. Excluding your own room, of course - that you have to keep clean yourself.

As for shared toilets of flats.. I think it depends on where you live but from most of what I saw it was like this: One big apartment that consits of several rooms (7 to 9 was it?). Could be on one level or split level. So you have a door to that big apartment. Once you enter, you've got all the rooms and one of the rooms would be the living area/kitchen. And a seperate room (meaning door) to toilets/showers/bath. Hope that helps/makes sense

Anyone know when you can start applying for halls again? I'm toying with the idea of going in halls next year...

I'll tell you straight off that that room is bigger than my Weston one.....but, I have to admit the ceiling is slightly further away from my head here.

Oooh - and that wardrobe is about 3 times the size of mine. If you own, say, more than 6 items of clothing that need to be hung bring a clothes rail if you're going to live in Weston. No exaggeration - I have given up on hanging mine...everything but my coats get folded and stuffed in the underbed storage lol.

I'd take a photo of my room in Grosvenor Street Building if it wasn't so messy. I currently have camping and kayaking gear spread out across the place, so it wouldn't be a fair comparison anyways. Grosvenor is veeerrryy quiet though, so you're best off looking for somewhere else if you want to live somewhere a bit lively. Doesn't bother me as I barely ever spend time here though :p:

That's a thought, Weston's on the quieter end of the scale too, so if you don't like that Whitworth definately has the better atmosphere.

I love Whitworth Park, it's so much fun here. It's quiet enough to get work done etc, but there are so many people around and it's close to places like 5th avenue closer to the city centre. And it's near to all my lecture buildings, which is great

True. City campus is way better - you can walk to most things. Weston is less than 10 mins walk to all the shops in the centre...and 2 mins from picadilly train station. Whitworth is good for Lidl etc and, depending on your subject, you're probably like 5 mins walk at the most from where your lectures are. (Don't hold me to that one though :P)
Have a good look at a map and figure out where you lectures are and if you mind having to get a bus to them. I didn't do that and *luckily* I only ended up with a 15 min walk (which is quite a good hangover cure when it's freezing/raining) or I can get the free bus (that thing is a life saver. It takes you from Sackville street in the old UMIST area, and up to the union close to Whitworth.)
i already live in manchester, and so go out round there (5th ave etc) quite a lot. living somewhere close important  haha. thanks for help everyone
