Opinions of Brighton

went into Brighton on friday and Saturday night and was bitterly disappointed. The streets were filled with drunk 12 year old girls with their little pikey boyfriends roaming the streets causing trouble.
One club didn't let us in because we weren't black, one club said "come back later" even though someone went in thirty seconds before us and the bars we went in to weren't any good at all.
Understandably being that it's our first week we didn't know the good places to go, but on the whole the actual people in the town on a night out ruined it for me two nights in a row. Is it always like that? Any one else got any thoughts?

Seiously, Brighton on a Friday and Saturday IS ****. Don't even bother with it. Go pubbing instead. It's hen nights and city workers down from London, for some reason willing to pay £15 entry. Sometimes you do get the big names coming to clubs on a weekend, that's probably the only time I'd bother.

Besides, it's cheaper midweek. 9am lecture the next morning? Meh...

Did the club actually say no "because you're not black"...? Hmm.

Well no she didn't say "because your not blakc"
she said, do you know what type of music it is tonight lads? And we said yeah, because it said it on the board outside the club. And she goes well i dont think its your type of thing, so don't come in.
I asked her if she would care to elaborate and she was like, its only hip hop and rnb.
We said so........
She said "there are no white people in there so........"

Hmm. Well, I don't know what all that was about.

Like I said though, the clubbing in Brighton at the weekend is more geared to tourists, certainly not students. I wouldn't bother.

You do get the big name acts sometimes, as I say, but you still pay a permium for it, and you have to decide whether that's worth it.

I'm not as into that stuff as much as I am my indie, so this is a slightly more outsiders' perspective. Just to clarify, like.

Hmmm. I'm loving it here.

If you get stuck, try Fortune of War, Arc, Zap, The BEach, Honeyclub, or Event II (all on the beach front between the two piers). In town, I think, there's Audio, The Standard, and 'Spoons.

[ Obviously that's not meant to be an exhaustive list - I've only been here a week ]

I hven't really done much exploring in town but the Beach is probably my favourite place so far. 90s night on every Monday was a good laugh.

Last Friday? You weren't meant to go to Beach then! Last Friday was a choice between the Freshers' Ball or Zane Lowe and Bloc Party @ Zap!

The Beach... pfft. :-p

I had the misfortune of taking a Saturday evening train from London to Brighton due to some engagements I had in London.

Yeah, uh... the whole of England comes to Brighton. And it's not pretty.

Go pubbing, go clubbing on the weekdays or Thursday which has its own designation surely as 'Thursday.'

As far as little kids looking tough which is mentioned above, it's true. I would like to hope that they are mostly harmless and that the police have a handle on things.

I went into Brighton last monday to The Beach for 90s night - 90p entry 90p drinks! and it was ok.. nothing too special. Went to the Honeyclub after the pub crawl on the Tuesday and absolutely loved it, going back this wednesday for the netball social

going out in Brighton tonight  Not such a good idea since I think I might have gotten fresher's flu already... :frown:
It is pretty crap on weekends generally...But if you get away from West Street and the pikey hell surrounding it there are a few bars which remain nice...It's never going to be cheap though unfortunately :frown:

Anyway what are you doing straying off campus on your first weekend, you should be at Hothouse!
Some of the best nights I've had tended to involve going to Sainsbury's and buying a shedload of booze, cracking out the cards and a copy of Troll 2 (or other terrible movie) and getting rat-arsed.

That's not to say we haven't had fun in the pubs either though...

OH MY GOD, what club was that???
Yeaah at weekends its WAY too expensive and chavvy, full of sleazy men too. Go out on student nights in brighton, which is every weekday. I know lectures are a bum though, but it depends what kind of music you like.

I tend to hate most clubs in brighton but theyre some of the best.

If you like Indie/Rock try audio on a tuesday, the gloucester on a thursday and the arc on a saturday! The arc is awesome - less of the whole chav scene on a saturday so we usually end up there. Or corrosion/90s on a monday at honey (that tends to be the only night at honey without sleazebags everywhere)

If you like normal chart music try boogaloo at audio on a thursday or honey on a wednesday.

The zap is sh*t.
Funky buddha is ok, though we went there yesterday and there was about 6 people so we left.
I've lived in Brighton my whole life, so let me give you an idea of where to go.

STAY AWAY FROM WEST STREET ON FRIDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT! It's a crud-hole full of Brighton's youngest and London's dirtiest.

Best club in town is Audio, just left of the Palace Pier. Then there's Beach, Honeyclub, and a couple of others along the sea front. The Event II is a bit chavvy and crap.

Brighton is best for it's bars in my opinion. Greens (opposite 'Spoons) is great, Sidewalker in Kemp Town, Dorset in North Laine. And there's always Walkabout to start off the evening before all the chavs turn up. There are some real nice pubs too.

Friday and Saturday nights really are 'white shirt, collars up' lad nights, mainly 'cos they're foolish enough to pay extortionately to get into a club. Once you're in, drink here isn't cheap. £2.50+ for a pint, £4+ for a double shot of spirit.

However, Brighton is one of the best places in Britain! It's so friendly and 'out there' and alternative (in places). Plus it has the Pavillion and the new library and all the lanes areas. Enjoy your time here .

Yeah, the 'alternative' atmosphere kind of surprised me. A bit overdone I think.
Reply 16
I'm actually a bit disappointed by the 'alternative' scene here... :frown:

Where have you come from and what were you expecting?
Reply 18
Sweden.. Umm, I dunno, but I expected it to thrive here, and that most people walking around on the streets would be individually styled etc. However, I probably haven't been around long enough to make a proper judgement :p:

I've been to Brighton at weekends its not too bad if you avoid the more commerical clubs but thats the same as any city. I liked Brighton, in terms of its social scene its the cloest place I have been to Manchester. It also has a nice beach.

I've only spent a few days in Brighton so I can't comment much, people that live there will know much more than me, maybe I went on a good weekend. However everybody including the police told me to avoid West Street at weekends as its chav ville, so we did.

PS I've been to that Audio club, I liked it there had a good attomsphere. I also went to an indie night on a club by the beach I forget the name, that was on a saturday.

This is just my opinion as an outsider.

I can't comment on the university itself as I know nothing about it.
