Yes, floodplains are often very dry places.

Or not.

Anyway, how about the obvious fact that you're building on a ****ing floodplain, the clue really is in the name. In addition to this, if there are tectonic hazards in the area there could be a danger of liquefaction during an earthquake or just subsidence generally.
You are also probably building on good agricultural land, trading that off at the expense of more houses. If it's an entirely new development then there will be no existing acilities or amenities so new ones must be constructed or existing ones heavily overloaded.

There are many case studies around that show the disadvantages to building on flood plains. Basically they flood or have done in the past. Also once a precedent has been set for building on a flood plain then more may follow hence more put at risk from flooding. Insurance premiums are sky high or unavailable which is a significant disadvantage to the average homeowner. Mortgages may be unobtainable.Bulding on a flood plain may change the natural drainage patterns and hence produce problems elsewhere. Many have rich alluvial fertile soils so the land will be lost for agricultural use possibly. Also the loss of a possible recreation areas. Exchange a picturesque flood plain and rural amenity area perhaps for houses? Not a great trade off.

also global warming is likely to lead to a rise in sea levels, thus in 50 or 100 years, floodplains will be underwater.

Also a big point is insurance, its now a lot lot harder to get insurance when living or building on a floodplain than it was in the past

Well, not all floodplains will be under waterl Because not all floodplains are next to the sea. Unless you were making a complex point linking sea level change to river flow, which I doubt.

frazers right, akbar, stop being a prat cause hes right, no one here has answered the question fully themselves, and on general, yes, rising sea levels will cause flood plains to flood more regularly, i sent three months investigating it myself for my coursework with detailed info from water companies on water levels in areas, so be quiet for once and let frazer help the guy.
