Can you actually download? Here at charlotte court you can't as it's using the unis backbone so it's blocked! :frown:

What bandwidth are the packages and prices?

At CC is like £150 for 1mb £200 for 2 and £250 for 4mb (which btw isn't anywhere near 4mb it's 3.125mb anyone want to complain about this do, to offcom).

Thats well cheap 3.99 for 256 or 5.99 a week for 2 mb contract for whole time e.g 44 weeks so mine is about 200 quid.

Yep you can download.

Cool, not too bad, although 256k is a bit rubbish is it wireless...if it is I feel sorry for u, coz it tends to be alot slower than with a cable, well if you're the furthest away from the router that is.
Gamers and anyone who downloads stuff via torrent etc are best off on super, as the lite package blocks a load of ports. Of course you can tunnel around it if you have a little bit of knowledge or a friend on computer science 8) but that incurs a whole load of other problems.

Not for free you can't.

They'll block most ports apart from the ones that will be needed, ie for web browsing and email.

At Hallam, by the way, computing is not a science its just computing is very different to other unis in teaching and material too, much better than the other unis.

If you wanted to download the 256 wouldn't get you much at all anyway if it was unrestricted.

The lite is actually 512 iirc, super is 2mbit, even if it was 256 if you leave it always on over time you could download a ****load, I managed a lot back in the days where anytime dialup was standard, using download clients that reconnect when the connection drops.

I was referring to computing in a general sense of the word, the fact is at Hallam there is indeed a course entitled Computer Science, regardless of the content a student of a course like this or one similar to it is likely to be able to help someone wishing to bypass blocked ports or other traffic shaping measures.

On the contrary to what you state, you can in fact circumvent these things for free if you know how, I'll give you a hint: tunneling... This in fact relies on the fact that they leave ports such as 80 (web browsing) open for any level of user.

There is no need to take a patronising tone as I am in fact on a computer course at Hallam anyway.

Was informing in a polite way, and there isn't a course called Computer Science at hallam it's computing. I have a list infront of me of all computing degrees and none has Science next to it, because at hallam computing isn't a practical maths degree it's proper computing learning about practical things. I should know I'm on one, networks...convo killer!

They have to leave ports 25 and 80 open for a start (25 email) the others will be restricted, so they can only be used when traffic is low, or not clogging up the bandwidth.

What year are you in?

I'll go and do that programming work I've got to do...

Don't see how he was being patronising

There are definitely ways to circumvent the security...how I grabbed over 1.25TB last year

I personally wouldn't use Tunneling though, I'm sure there's a privacy risk, unless you pay for a service/set it up on your own server(s). But you would probably get away with using it in halls, from my experience, the ISPs that manage them don't check well enough.

Did unite ask for an activation fee btw? A scam if they did. How much would it cost to send through a signal or use tftp to send a config file?!

Creepy tells me he's on a 13Mb (down) 2Mb (up) Internet connection in Central Quay for £7/week. I'd have thought that unite would have a united internet scheme? Not sure what's up with that?

EDIT: Made M j R edit out a bit of info on how to circumvent the security...he gave away more then I liked...lmao!

I'm now on just over 2Mb download. I had a couple of days on 13Mbit but since more people have been signing up it's got slower, either that or they have sorted their routers out. It was fun whilst it lasted though

I'm trying to find a way to unblock the ports used for E-mule. (4662 TCP and 4672 UDP).

Not easy, sorry I was in a grouchy mood last night, probably took it the wrong way, but anyway I'm third year. I arrived here on move in day but never got 13 downstream, you must just be a lucky git.

That said my latency was on 200 on css last night whereas it started on 15 :frown:

the only reason i got the most expensive one was because i was told you cant use a web cam on the cheap package:mad: . Thats all i use the internet for really.

Can you switch to the cheaped package?

Nope you cant switch I can switch to the higher package but not the lower. The lower is fine for webcam it was a load of rubbish about not being able to get it.

Unite use BT and im on cable

webcam never worked on mine :frown: it doesnt work on any of my flatmates either so we all had to upgrade to the ridiculously expensive one, now it works fine on them all. maybe it just didnt like the look of us lot lol

You lot from Charlotte Court cant download? I'm staying at Charlotte court and I just downloaded The Killers new album via bittorrent with no problems at all!!

I think only M j R & I are from CC in this crowd.
BT is meant to be blocked. I did a quick check before on a range of ports using TCP/UDP and had the encryption enabled in utorrent to try and mask the P2P traffic, but no go.
We're running directly off the universities backbone, so they're trying their best to restrict access to non-academic resources.
How exactly did you get it working? What client/port/setup you run?
I didn't think it was possible unless torrentflux/utorrents web interface or any other remote client management software was used.
Maybe with Ask4's recent screw-ups they've messed up?

I just using normal BT downloader client not utorrent. Basically all i do is load up a torrent file into it and in the bottom corner it says searching for a firewall but after 5 - 10 mins it just starts downloading!

It's only downloading at 20 - 30 kb/s at the mo but thats because I only have the bronze package probably. Give it a try!
