Please help me with a question from my counselling coursework

How do counselors deepen their relationship with their clients?

Through gently probing and asking questions about their patients experiences. Starting off slow from how was your day to then deepening and asking how did you feel when that happened?
They're especially interested in finding out more about childhood memories and last experiences, upbringing etc as these often has an impact and effect on the current life of the patient.

As well as asking questions, counsellors often also tell stories and experiences of their own or of people they know to help the patient feel they are able to relate and able to discuss common topics so the patient can feel they can open up more.
