Doesn't seem to be popular. Where are all those people from SOAS and other Unis doing oriental studies?

cambridge oriental studies would be an excellent way of grounding you in the culture and politics of the relevant countries- all students are obliged to spend the 3rd year abroad...so your friend would have to go to india for the year i presume- fab experience for a potential diplomat.

though i wouldn't recommend he specialise in sankskrit...it being mainly language of scriptures and all. hindi is taught as well. Unlike the modern langs course though, i'm not sure how strong the emphasis is on students becoming fluent in the languages studied. a great deal of the course seems to deal with history/culture/literature etc
