check the thread, eveyone says maths EE are quite hard at my school. the only person taht ever did one had to have it marked in part by a uni professor cos it was so hard
Yeah its really hard. I admire ppl who it

I'm doing mine in Maths, probably a stupid decision, but as I like maths I really want to do it... As far as i know at my school noone has got better than a C for EE in maths.

I have an excellent source for ideas to EEs, but it is in Swedish, so I'm afraid it won't help... But ask your maths teacher, he shall have sample EEs and examples of essay titles that has been given to him by IBO... (at least my teacher has some good info...)

I'm doing mine in maths as well. I've looked at stuff like Fibonacci's Sequence, Binary Numeral System, Fermat's Theorem, Mathematics in Music etc... but the problem with maths is that it is hard to do a primary research because chances are someone somewhere has already come up with a general conjecture for whatever you are doing. Or at least that's what my physics and maths teachers have been telling me everytime they shoot my proposed title down. Now I still haven't got a title.
A friend told me that a girl in her year did Mathematics in Origami. I thought that was about the most creative title I have ever heard of for Maths EE.

Yeah, I agree that the problem is to find a reasonable title... The problem is that it is not exactly as 'easy' as in chem or phys or anything where you can do an experiment... I mean it is pretty pointless writing an EE on how to solve quartic equations by hand or something like that which surely has been made many times before...

I have not decided my title yet, but I'm going to write mine on traffic flow...

Well, I've found some resources on sample Math titles and abstracts but it'd be nice to get a better idea of what IB expects out of the EE. It seems that not a lot of students do math EE's but apparently we have a better chance of getting an A (forgot where I read this). But of course, it depends on the choice of topic.

I'm the second person doing a Math EE at my school ... but I think I've got enough resources to do a Math EE. I'm up for the challenge

I'd prefer the marks in the bag thanks :p: - ITGS here I come

Even I am doing my EE in maths and most proabably in Astronomy

Can someone please give me sample essays because my teacher doesn't have any sample essays.

I initally wanted to do mine in Astrophysics too but my physics teacher told me it was a non-starter because the IB doesn't like Astrophysics. Is that true??

IB likes somethign in physics where you can do experimentation for yourself, looking at stars i spose makse it harder to arrange and complete an experiment for yourself
And submitting a maths EE on astrophysics I'm not really sure if it is the best idea... it might fit better under Physics... or at least one shall seriously look through what one have written and see if it is mostly maths or mostly physics. And generally IBO tends to like anything involving experiments, and as andy cole said it is hard to do experiments on astro. But I think it is possible to write a good EE on astrophysics, but it doesn't seem like an task...

of course it would be under physics. astrophysics is a branch of physics, clearly stated in the syllabus. the IBO likes to see people experimenting and actually finding out something new, or approaching data in a new and unique way. for some topics this is extremely hard due to the limited available data, astrophysics included. i was going to do statistical analysis of GCSE results but...whats new really? the old 'are boys or girls better'? *sighs* stupid IB!!

Hehe, I certainly agree it is hard to come up with interesting, original and preferably data-related essays in maths... I simply hate statistics and thus I never considered it when chosing topic, but stat really is good when writing in maths as it is pretty easy to get data to process. I have a friend doing his on taxicab trigonometry, which is interesting, but not involving any data or so really.

It's clearly stated in its name as well :p:

Astrophysics --> Astro - Physics

If it was a maths subject it would be called Astromaths LOL

Candidates may choose mathematical topics from fields such as engineering, the sciences, or the social sciences as well as from pure mathematics. Statistical analyses of experimental results taken from other subject areas are also acceptable provided that they focus on the modelling process and discuss the limitations of the results; such essays should not include much non-mathematical detail. A topic selected from the history of mathematics may also be appropriate provided that a clear line of mathematical development is demonstrated. Concentration on the personal intrigues or lives of mathematicians is irrelevant and is unlikely to score on the subject assessment criteria.

Like the syllabus says, as long as your EE is based on the mathematical modelling process and the limitations involved, doing something in astrophysics may be possible. But people should be really careful when writing a Math EE pertaining to different subjects.

I am planning to do my Extended Essay of Mathematics as well.
It's hard, I've seen sample essays and it's not a good idea to have a broad topic and the problem also is this is an essay, you're not trying to prove some formulas so more words and less working out is something seem to be important as well.
It's hard, most teachers in my school discourage students doing a Math EE.

actually, i am doing math EE as well, it is hard, honestly.
my topic is to find the way comparing two infinitive sets, sounds incredible,ei?
anyway, i will come across this terrible topic.
I chose math, cuz I am amazed by the beauty it holds. I think some candidate of 2007 has the same feeling of mine. My resouces is in the library near our college. It is a big university library which has aundant book anout math. The onlt thing is I can't bring them out.
Additionally, my supervisor is an PhD, he has lots of knowledge in field of math. But I am quite lazy to meet him and talk about my work. KKKK, all in all, good luck everyone who is doing math as me.

Yeah, I'm pretty much on my own for my EE ... *sighs* still need to narrow my topic...
