Cystic fibrosis, in the lungs, leads to dehydration (thicker mucus) and dysfunction of the cilia. Recall that this system is important in clearing micro-organisms from the respiratory tract. Bacteria and things get trapped in the mucus and this is pushed up into the throat by beating cilia, where the mucus can then be swallowed. If the mucocilliary elevator is impaired, like in CF, then the individual is predisposed to recurrent respiratory infection. The common bugs affecting people with CF are Staph. Aureus and Pseudomonas. Therefore, antibiotics are key in the management of CF.
