Eye test results

 Just been for an eye test and was given this card but I don't know what the results mean, she didn't really comment, plus it was hot in there I just wanted to get out.

One of my eyes is clearly not as good as the other

R SPH +0.25
L SPH +0.50

R CYL -0.25
L CYL -0.25

R AXIS 110
L AXIS 75

BVD 12

 I can't find a site which explains all this.

Your eyes are near to perfect. You're slightly farsighted, you won't even get classes for that (unless you want to, of course). Right eye = +0.25, left eye = +0.50. Don't worry about the other stuff.

What is perfect? When people say they have 20/20 vision what does that mean?

Perfect would be 0.00 and no astigmatism.

+ = farsighted, - = nearsighted.

I'm -8 so very badly nearsighted AND I have an astigmatism. In Horrorboy's case, +0.25 is 'nothing'.

I've never heard of 20/20 vision and I've been going to the eye specialist for 18 years.

EDIT: how much did that tattoo hurt?

So does it goes +0.25, 0.24, 0.23 all the way to 0.00?

To be honest I regret getting it and didn't feel it much, its a souvenir from a night out:redface:

Does that mean I can see too far? She never said anything, I went because my eyes go blurred at night.

No it goes 0.25, 0.50, 1.00, 1.25.... you won't get a stronger prescription for 0.25.

Oh dear. You'll get used to it and like it again (I hope!).

20/20 vision is "normal" vision - pretty much perfect. I don't know how the scale goes, but I've heard of someone who was blind in one eye who had really bad, 20/200 vision.

It means you're better at seeing things in the distance than nearby, e.g. when you read a book you'll keep it further away from you than when you're nearsighted.

Your eyes going blurred at night shouldn't have anything to do with it, that might be nightblindness. Why don't you ring her up to ask her about that?

That would be 10%, which is nearly blind indeed. My great aunt has only 5% left. :frown:

20/20 on the Sneller test technically means that you can see, from a distance of 20ft, what a person with normal vision can see from 20ft. 20/40 means you can see as clear from 20ft what a person with normal vision could see from 40ft et cetera until you reach 20/200, which is the final point on the scale before being registered "blind". However, they have now converted the scale to metric, so 20/20 becomes 6/6, 20/40 becomes 6/12 et cetera until 6/60.

OP, did you not have a score for visual acuity i.e. 6/6, 6/12, because I thought that was the most important part of the eye test! The optometrist told me that I couldn't have scored any higher without cheating in my one eye, as my prescription states 6/6+2. But the rest of the eye test came up with pretty much similar to yours:-

Right Sphere +0.25
Right Cylinder -0.50
Right Axis 90

Left sphere +0.25
Left Cylinder -0.25
Left Axis 75

Visual Acuity
Aided Distance
Right 6/6+3
Left 6/6+2

Unaided Vision
Right 6/6+2
Left 6/6+1

Near Vision
Right N5
Left N5

And that concludes my eye test results. Yeah.

I didn't have visual acuity, its not on the results. What is BVD? I got 12 for that.

Reply 12

According to good old t'Internet, BVD means back vertex distance, and the average "score" is 14mm, with 12-16mm considered normal. But I don't have that on mine, so I have no point for comparison! Where did you have it done?

Specsavers, so with BVD is it the higher the better?

Reply 14

Well if this optometry site says 12-16 is average, I would assume that 14 is an average, and as you get further away, the more abnormal the value is.

Oh, and I went to Vision Express!

Ok thanks, I can't find much info on it from the net, oh well not that it matters much. So yeah, our eyes are good

No problem- indeed they are!

Though the optometrist told me that I might become astigmatic in later life- I think it was because my one cylinder was 0.5, but it may have been the axis score, I don't remember.

Reply 17

My sister's was similar to yours, except she's short sighted! Last time I went I had 0.00, so no glasses for me yet!
