People at Uni shouldn't be phased by something like hearing aids. If you have any problems, go to your student advice centre, I think they take bullying like this very seriously.

And if they don't do anything, sell your story to the News of the World.
People at uni are a lot more mature than those at school (hopefully!). There are so many different people in one place that nobody should be rude to you about your hearing aids.

Obviously i don't know naything about your loss or the type of aid you use - but you could look into 'in the ear' models, which people on the street are unlikely to even notice?
Ask your audiologist or have a look at what your new NHS authority (moving to a different location for uni might be handy in this instance! :p: ) provide or investigate purchasing some privately.

But you shouldn't need to hide the fact you wear them - people should be mature enough to deal with it. Though if you get computers/gadgets through the DSA you might get some jealous comments!
i think you can only get "in the ear" ones privately, and they cost loads.
She'd be ok with her hair up walking down the street with in the ear ones, but people can still look into your ear and see if they're right next to you.

I dont see why anyone will bully you at uni, bullies are usually the no-hopers and not the type to make it to uni, in my experience.
hi lucy, dont worry i'm deaf, but lipread and can hear a fair amount with my hearing aids, and ive never had any problems at uni. in fact ive found everyone to be most accepting and have no problems making sure that i can hear them, students and lecturers alike.

I was registering at my uni medical facility a week or so ago and a girl with hearing aids came in, the assistant in the centre didn't seem to take a blind bit of notice that she was trying to lipread and kept turning her head away! Not very helpful.

There is no sympathy from anyone at universities towards bullies and it is taken very seriously because age 18+ people should know better and be more open minded than to be so cruel. It's more than their degree is worth to take the mess as they can risk their place as harassment of any kind is a grounds for dismissal.
I'm sure you shouldn't have any problems as university is great for being yourself in my opinion. Sorry to hear you have been bullied in the past and even more sorry to hear you have had abuse thrown at you from strangers.

If anything does happen don't be scared to go to student support as no one will have a go at you for being a 'grass' at uni, and they will do all they can to help you! Good luck and don't worry =)
I've got a friend here who also has to wear two hearing aids, and no-one has commented or said anything about it. Which is kind of the way it should be- obviously everyone knows about them but no-one bullies or takes the piss at all, so you'll be fine.I've managed to get some help (which wasn't exactly what was needed, by never mind, they tried) for my Asperger's, hence can also say that uni disability services are normally quite good.

Otherwise you could wear a hat that covers your ears such as a beanie or head band, or wear oversized earphones. Or maybe glue dangling wires to them so people think they're headphones!

I am also supposed to wear hearing aids. I did at school and had a horrilbe time because of it.

I decided to go to college miles way and start from scratch, I didn't wear my hearing aids but explained to my friends that I should wear them so if I take a second to reply its because it takes me longer to process what has said. They were very understanding.

By university I learnt to lip read so much that I didn't need to wear them anyway, I just made sure I always sat 3rd row from the front (I am not geeky enough for the front row ) so it was very rare I couldn't hear things. My friends were very good and understood this, I explained the technical problems with hearing aids so were very patient with me.

People at university are generaly very very understanding and are mature enough to understand disabilities (they are at least 18 after all).

With regards to lip reading again its always good to tell people that you need to this and make your lecturers aware so that in tutorials you can see whats going on. I found very my lecturers did this in a very sublte way.

I didn't feel any different to anybody else in the slightest. I was bullied a lot at school and during the my entire time at university I wasn't bullied once and was seen as one of the most popular people on my course, everybody knew me etc, the same thing happened at college.

So please please don't worry about any past experience at school, its all in the past.
try growing ur hair? don't mention things about hearing aids? sorry i'm just looking at it in your perspective...my friend has hearing aids, but she managed to uni her way to success in pharmacy ^^ dont pay attention to those guys!

Whooo! Thanks so much everyone! I hadn't checked back on this forum for ages and when I did I was so pleasantly surprised! I'm so glad everyone's so understanding, I myself don't have a problem with my hearing aids, I'm just a bit nervous about bullying so it's good to be reassured  Do you know what I think? I think hearing aids are not any more 'weird' than glasses, they are just for a different sensory impairment and they are not as common as glasses. I have pink ones, by the way

I wear hearing aids in both ears and usually when I wear my hair up random people in the street shout horrible things at me like 'spaz' just because I wear hearing aids! People at school have been just as horrible in some instances. I wear my hair down all the time for this reason, but I'm worried that at uni I won't be able to hide the fact I wear them (I mean, I'll be living with my fellow students). I fear that I will get bullied because of my problem. Does anyone on this forum have friends with a similar problem? Do they get treated badly?

I wear hearing aids, and go to De Montfort. I haven't had any problems at all and have made loads of friends.

Don't worry.

I think you would have to expect a few random idiots at Universities, but nothing serious that would be regarded as bullying. Unless, of course, someone had a major problem with you.

I can't see anyone being sad enough to bully you for that. I often share a lecture theater with someone who's deaf. He has an interpreter doing sign language for every lecture, and I don't think anyone's even remarked about it once. You'll be absoloutely fine.
People at uni are more mature so i don't you shoud ahev any problems. Don't get yourself down though

I wear hearing aids too, I wouldn't worry about it. People would be more mature at university and should understand alot better. At the mo, I'm in 6th form and I believe no-one cares about hearing aids, they're just like 'glasses'. Anyway, doesn't matter what other people think, be happy and confident about yourself, I'm sure you're a great person and alot of people would love to be friends with you. Hope you have a good time at uni!
