Ok so today I have just returned an item i bought with my debit card. The person serving ME at the till asked me to put my card in the machine and input my pin. I've got the receipt and it's saying ' refund due: -£38' . £38 was how much I paid for the item but the refund on the receipt says -£38 . shouldn't it say '£38' instead of minus. because right after I went to the bank and the £38 has not been added back at all

It is not immediate!
The quickest it could show would be the next working day. It may even take several days.

Refunds aren't instant. It can take up to 5 days for your bank to process, although usually it's about 24 to 48 hours. So the fact it wasn't showing straight away shouldn't be a concern.

Keep your receipt safe in case you need to query it, but it sounds fine. The minus sign is probably just the till showing it's money going out, not in.
