Hey guys, I'm doing a school project on Indie. It's an informative speech. It's supposed to be 6ish minutes, and visual/hearing aids are allowed.

I'm really freaking out because I didn't realize how tough it is to define/talk about indie. Thought maybe you all could help me a little bit.

My three main points at the moment are 1) Definition of indie, 2) Indie music/film, and 3) Indie culture.

What should I focus on with the three of them? Anything I ought to mention?

    Thanks for the help.

Anyone have an idea for a definitive indie sounding song from which I could use a clip as an aid?

Indie as a genre of music that was originally typified by artists on independent labels, but has since been highjacked to mean any traditional band that is /vaguely/ less commercial than stereotypical pop yet not as rawkous as metal or punk, whether on a major label or not.

As such, the genre has little to no meaning, with stupid amounts of bands being given the tag, ranging from the stupidly commercial pop like The Killers to MOR acts like Coldplay to other bands The Smiths to DCFC to Modest Mouse to Neutral Milk Hotel to The New Pornographers to Belle & Sebastian to The Arcade Fire to The Boy Least Likely To to Franz Ferdinand, many of which are completely incomparable music-wise.

Yes yes, so how do I make that into a cohesive informative speech?

check out this link - specifically the top 3 articles:

As far as indie music goes, there's so much to it it's hard to pick one song. I'd go for a song by Pavement, since they were one of the first bands to my knowledge to be categorized "indie rock".

What you should emphasise is that indie music is a very broad range of sounds, everything from post-rock like Explosions in the Sky/GYBE to raging hardcore punk like Black Flag/Minor Threat. What they all have in common is a very DIY approach, and a true passion for the music they're playing, since most indie bands do not get a lot of financial reward for what they play, unless they strike lucky like Franz Ferdinand.

I've been on wiki for three hours

What does it mean when they (and you) say "do it yourself" approach. How does that all apply?
