Are you allowed to write cheques to yourself if you want to transfer money from one account to another? I need to transfer a stealthy sum into another account and I don't want to have to carry a huge wad of cash through the city!

Yes.
[EDIT] Bear in mind it'll take 5 working days to clear though... just carry the cash, unless you live in a VERY dodgy area.

Brilliant! I don't mind 5 working days, as long as it clears within a month that's fine:smile:

You could just do a straight transfer. It'd probably clear quicker and, well, it's what normal folk do.

Everyone I know writes a cheque to themselves...there's a charge for transfers...

I'm with the Halifax-Bank of Scotland and I've never once been charged for a transfer. Notably I do them regularly to pay my rent, transfer cash between me and my parents and so on...

Did you know that you can also transfer money by phone. All you need to do is open a phonesaver account with your bank if they do this. You can also get better interest rates if you bank by phone or online.

Well where is the OP from? This is a UK forum so I gave a UK answer.

Some UK banks do charge...it goes without saying that banks here charge...they even charge me to connect to the internet banking site

The general "high street" banks don't charge here for functions like that. Although there's rumblings that they want to

BACS transfers usually don't have charges (in the UK). CHAPS and some other ways of transferring money do.

Echo. BACS does take 3 days to clear, whereas CHAPS is same day, though.

I work in financial services, I do a hell of a lot of BACS/CHAPS/SWIFT transferrals.

Nationwide let you transfer money between accounts instantly and for free online. Any amount.
I can transfer money between my Natwest accoutns online and it shows up same day.

I can pay (for free) money to other bank accounts and also to pay bills.

You could possibly phone your bank and tell them to do it that way - or go into the branch, withdraw the money and pay it into the other bank branch - in that case you would only be walking around town

Don't always expect them to count the cash in private tho - they once counted 2k out on a normal counter in front of everyone!
