How do you treat the news on possible "economic Schengen" comprising Germany and France? I see it as the attempt of the two EU engines to actually flee the EU! They put it plain, "We are sick and tired of all of you. Stop exploiting us as milking cow and just leave us alone!".
So the EU will be left for economically feeble countries, mostly post-communist countries. Amid this background the EU drive of Ukraine and some other newly independent countries looks just as some foolishness! It just makes no sense at all! Am I right?

I'm not sure how all the leftist progressives can support the EU after their hand in this Ukraine mess. What really happened is the US helped finance a coup of Ukraine's Democratically elected pro-Russian leader. They literally used fascists, ultra nationalists to seize power and of course put in a pro-US/EU and anti-Russian government.Ukraine's army have been slaughtering Eastern-Ukrainians who have strong ties to Russia. Democracy does no matter to the US and EU, because they know they would vote pro-Russia since that's what the people want. They are using Ukraine as a stepping stone into invading Russia.

No I don't think they will leave. Tough times do make people more conservative though, so there's little surprise the EU is experiencing political strain.

Germany is understandably miffed since the the crisis has exposed the fact that there is certainly a good and bad Eurozone.

France is being hamstrung primarily by their own incompetence. They tax too much, the unions are too powerful and in general the UK and Germany are seen as better places to do business.
