Critically evaluate the proposal that attachment styles represent personality variables..
Do the personality variables refer to the big 5?

Depends. I would certainly concentrate on the Big Five if I was writing that essay. But also, Eysenck's 3 factor and psychodynamic stages of fixation (oral, anal etc.) and personality types (e.g. authoritarian or Myers-Briggs) lend themselves well to your topic. Don't foret attachment style was invented by the psychoanalysts! Also, could use Block's Types and Torgersen's. Possibly even things like Rosenhan's Type A and associated B, C, D could be used, and Harry Harlow's anxious personality monkeys, plus many hundreds more!

Personality variable means any personality traits or types essentially (non-specific), so any you want to pick would be equally valid as long as referenced.
