The Student Room Group

wow....

This is amazing....when i used to live at home i used to have loads of spots. I considered myself to be a healthy eater, but really i probably only ate 2-3 portions of fruit and veg a day. Since ive been at uni though, i wanted to eat healthily but havent had time, so ive been taking these vitamin C tablets (which give about 500% of the RDA).Since ive started taking them (and its the only thing in my diet thats changed), my spots have completely cleared up, im about 95% certain thats it down to the tablets. So people...the moral of this story...if your spotty, dont use all those creams and stuff, just get some good old vitamin C!!
apparently taking too much vitamin c is really really bad for you. there was something in the paper a while ago.

That's great to read and you must be over-the-moon, but I'm afraid that discovery is short lived as this will not work for everyone who has spots, for example, Vitamin C cannot help with acne plus the body has a way of just expelling Vitamin C, it only uses what it needs - that is why the dosage of Vitmain C is usually quite high.

Every person will have a success story featuring a different 'miracle' cure for spots - this is yours.
I don't want to be scary, but surely it can't be too healthy overall to consume 500% of the vitamin C you require?

I'm glad to hear that it's helped your skin though.

Go back to 100% now, your body just needed a kick.

There generally isn't a problem with having too much vitamin C because your body can't retain it and therefore, it's pretty diffuclt to over dose. If you look at most vitimin C tablets sold in shops tend to rnge between 200% and 1000% of your RDA - it's not really likely to cause any problems. There's quite a lot of research that says superdosing on VitC can actively help your immune system, and help you recover from things, so maybe it's just had a similar effect in boosting their system.

Other vitamins are a different story, however, and some of them are extremely dangerous if you overdose... so don't unless you know what you're doing.
I read a medical paper of some kind on RDA labels on food/tablets etcand what it actually means for commen substances, as far as vit c is concerned, this RDA is actually the minimum daily amount and this doctor recommended for general daily health what it would class as about 500% and they have in the past percribed over 5000% of this to help patients who are ill. As people have said its really hard to OD on it because the body uses all it needs then disposes of the rest. However if they are multivits you are taking you are best researching everything in them before taking mroe than one tab aday incase anyone was considering that!

just checked the literature - the upper limit between safe and dangerous is 2222% of the RDA.
