Hello all,

I am an international student from the United States, and I plan to start attending Nott this spring for my penultimate year. I am having trouble deciding which accommodation to go with though. I have friends who recommend catered because you meet more people, but the accommodation office recommended self-catered. I have already been allocated a room at BGP, but I am debating on switching to catered.

I am trying to save money since international fees are quite expensive, so which would be better for that? Most importantly, which would be better for meeting people? I love going out, whether that involves parties or doing something outdoors, and meeting new people, but I know that can be difficult since most people already have their friend groups from freshman year and such. Any advice or direction will be greatly appreciated!

Self catering will work out cheaper because you can control how much you spend on food, whereas catered obviously costs a certain amount and includes your meals. Some people prefer catered because once they've paid their charges they know that they'll be getting warm meals without having to worry about budgeting for them, but I like the freedom of self catered. You'll be able to socialise at any accommodation-self catered will mean you meet people in your kitchen/dining area, and you might all have a few drinks there on a night/before going out. And the social events events organised by the SU and the university will obviously be open to you whatever accommodation you're in.

Hi,

On paper at face value, catered halls actually work out cheaper once you've added in the money for food that you'd spent in self catered. However, are you planning on going home in the holidays? If you AREN'T, I'd go self-catered because in catered halls you have to clear your room out at the end of every term or pay £5 per night to keep your stuff in it (and £20 to live in it).

However, if you're going home in the holidays then definitely go catered - it's so much more sociable!
