I study in Oxford, and I'm always puzzled when I see Asian students wearing filter masks over their faces when out and about. Does anybody know why they do this? It'd make sense if we were still in the Industrial Revolution but it just looks silly.

Because of the pollution in chine and in densly populated areas. It part of their tradition that in areas which are dense or polluted they wear these to prevent any lung damage

I have noted this also and i wonder if they are just using cheap ones or have actually bought FFP3 standard masks or similar? What are they actually seeking protection from? Diesel particulates or airbourne/water droplet ype viruses such as influenza?
