Hi, sorry I used the "New Car" thread and filled in the form. Didn't know it would create a thread automatically, lol.

Anyway I am planning on buying my first car and I wanted some advice. Aside on the model, I would like to know if you'd go to a dealership or rather buy from a private, keeping in mind that I don't really understand much of cars.

Many many thanks..

What is your budget?

4000
What is going to be the main use of the car?
Daily commuting to work (25mi back and forth)
How many passenger will you usually be carrying?
0
How big a boot do you need?
Small
Specific tasks you will be doing?
Not really
Any brands you would prefer? Any brands you hate?
I just hate the Ford Ka.
What features in the car are important to you?
Reliability and possibly comfort.
What gearbox do you want?
Manual
Are aesthetics of the car important?
No
Special requirements?
Aesthetics are not important up to a certain degree. I mean, it's okay if it's not nice, but I would rather not to drive a 1997 Fiat Panda with rust all over that would only make people laugh at it.
What is the minimum fuel consumption you require?
30

Fiesta? Or if you want larger:

Focus? Golf? Meets your budget, and all your requirements (and some).

If you don't understand much about cars then either:
A) Take a car-minded person with you to private sales. (Can be some quite good deals, you generally pay more for the same car at a dealership.)

B) Buy it from a reputable dealership yourself.

25 miles back and forth, so we can rule out any diesels then.

Honda Prelude 2.2 VTI preferably the H22a8 unit
Ibiza 1.8T
EP3 Type R
Toyota Celica VVTLI/Corolla alternative
Toyota mr2 mk2 2.0 n/a

Do some research before buying any cars, and quick google search like "Focus MK1 Common problems" and you can get an rough idea of things to look out for, majority of owner club forums will have a page with a list of items to look for when doing a check of a car
