Hi Everyone,

I'm supposed to design an experiment to determine the population size of a reptile at school and I'm just not sure what method to use because I have no way of marking the lizards,

Hope you can help!

Well, capture-mark-recapture is a classic method, but as you say you have to mark without affecting the species. Is this a real experiment or just a thought experiment?

The alternative is to sample a number of areas and count all reptiles, then extrapolate to the whole area.

It's a thought experiment i.e. just the Design.

If it's a thought experiment, then just mark them with something that does not affect them. Or were you specifically told you cannot do that?

You could always take photos of the animals you capture, then when you recapture compare them against the photos to see if they're the same ones. You might need a species with distinctive markings to do that successfully though.

Thank you so much.
I'm now just wondering what the Independent and Dependent variables are, can you help me with that too?
