I'm in my first year of A Levels, and my laptop is useless. It takes 20 mins to load up, doesn't work without being plugged in, freezes for no reason... You get the picture. My 17th birthday is in April, and my parents have said they might give me half the money towards a macbook for my birthday, which would give me enough to buy one (MacBook Pro retina). So, should I buy one then (Easter) or wait until just before I go to uni? I think the macbook would benefit my A Level study (English Lang, biology, psychology and business, looking to do business at uni) or do you think getting a newer 2015/2016 model when they are released would be better?

Do you need to get the latest version? I bought an air the other week and I'm in my 2nd year of A levels. I think it would be a good idea to get one now as your old one sounds useless, but you could save quite a bit of money by buying the air instead? You only really need the pro if you're going to be doing video editing or anything like that, and the only other problem with the air is that it doesn't have a CD port, but that doesn't matter for a lot of people.

Depends on your financial circumstances. You do get a discount when you buy it as a HE student. Also by then it would have gone through an update with better features.

If your current machine is unusable, which it sounds like it is, then I'd upgrade to the MacBook Pro as soon as you can. You could get a model with better specifications at a slightly lower price if you waited until university, but as that's another 18 months later I definitely wouldn't say it was worth waiting for that long, especially given the state of your current laptop.
