The Student Room Group

Would this bother you Part2

I tried to resurect the thread I started a couple of weeks ago, but I couldn't find it, sorry! :frown:

Anyway I'm that girl who at school was teased coz I was a nerd, but they targeted my background (mum's Fillipino and Spanish, dad is half Indian).

Today I heard a horrible comment regarding Fillipino people in that some girl in my class, but I tried to educate her but I still felt crap afterwards. My mum is a registered nurse who cares for people, why should I have to put up with these comments?

You shouldn't. I'd suggest telling a teacher, but we all know what schools are like. This would only make it worse. I don't really have any suggestions to make, other than to either try to ignore it or to tell a teacher anyway and hope for the best.

I am wondering how mainstream these opinions are, or whether it was just this girl being an idiot.

Thanks  I'm glad to know not everyone thinks like her

I was quite disturbed to say the least, as I'm very western. Just nerdy.

Sad as it is to say, you're going to get racism anywhere you go. As much as we like to think we live in a civilised culture, we really don't. Bigotry is rife everywhere, against people of all sexes, religions, races, political views, whatever.

Many people just don't like things that are different from themselves.

Yeah I know, anyone can be like that, no matter where you're from.

It's good that I look mostly like my dad who's Anglo-Indian, but then ppl don't Indians either so I don't win either way :p:

At least you're not a disabled black Jewish gay. Things might get tough then.

 Yes there's always ppl worse off than you :frown:

Anyway nice to know not everyone thinks like that girl

Ok I'll come out with it, I'll be honest - she said she thought that Fillipino girls were skanky, ugly and lazy, and I'm far from it

So I'm like, 'if you wanna take the piss for me being a nerd, why don't you bring up the Indian thing, they can be nerds'

What does she mean by skanky? I would question what she predicates this particular conclusion on, as I would with her contention that Fillipinos are lazy.

As for the ugly thing... there's not much you can say in response to that. That's purely a matter of opinion, really. It's rather an unpleasant thing to voice such an opinion, especially in that fashion, but it's her opinion and you may well just have to accept it.

I'm not ugly anyway so I'm not worried :p:

Also am only 1/4 Fillipino as my mum's also half Spanish but whatever. I was far more disturbed about the skanky ugly thing.

If you're not ugly, then who cares? You can make all sorts of generalisations about all sorts of demographics, and sure, they can be offensive, but if they're not personally applicable to you, then there's no need to become disturbed by then. Offended, yes, but disturbed, definitely not.

Yeah it wasn't personally applicable to me  I'm highly ambitious when it comes to academic work, let me tell you!

But I don't want ppl to immediately assume she married my father for his money, if anything it was the other way around! My mum is older than my dad, by 5 years, and supported him before he got a proper job. She is a very hard working registered nurse, too.

Chances are that people stupid enough to judge somebody on their ethnicity isn't open minded enough to change their tune based on something as insignificant as "facts" or "proof."

*Nods* This person is very judgemental, you can tell by the way she talks to you and people around her, the type that jumps to conclusions. Calling ppl fat when they might be size 12 or something, so it's not just me.

Anyway thanks for your help

Cheered me a litte.
Was the girl who was calling you a chav by any chance?
If you are who I think you are - then you are the opposite from all the stuff this girl said. Try and forget about her, she isn't worth your time!

I guess you could call her that, but she's a very popular chav  She's one of those tough girls who think they're funny, but are actually quite mean :frown:

Nevermind, Squelchy has cheered me up - it is obvious not everyone thinks like her, I was just offended by her comments that's all.
