# What's the quickest way to solve this problem? watch

1. Hey.

I came across this question and wanted to know what would be the quickest way of solving it?

3.246 x 10^6 + 3.246 x 10^4
-----------------------------
1.623 x 10^11

where ----------- means divided by.

Thanks.
2. On a calculator.
3. 3.246 x 10^6 + 3.246 x 10^4 can be written as 3.246 x 10^10, if you have brackets. Then it should become obvious.
4. 3.246 x 10^6 + 3.246 x 10^4
----------------------------- =
1.623 x 10^11

3.246 x 10^4(10^2 + 1)
----------------------------- =
1.623 x 10^4 x 1.623 x 10^7

2 x 101
-------------- =
1.623 x 10^7

2.01 x 10^(-5)
------
1.623

1.23845 x 10^(-5)

can it
6. 3.246 x 10^6 + 3.246 x 10^4
-----------------------------
1.623 x 10^11

let u = 1.623

(2u * 10 ^ 6) + (2u * 10^4)
-----------------------------
u x 10^11

10^4 * 2 *(1 + 10^2)
-----------------
10^11

202 * 10^-7 = 0.0000202.

BMAT is non-calc! Another Oxbridge Medic. Great!
7. divide by 1.623

2 x 10^6 + 2 x 10^4 / 10^11

2*10^4(10^2 + 1) / 10^11

2(10^2 + 1) / 2*5*10^6

10^2 + 1 / 5*10^6

2^2 * 5^2 + 1 / 5^7 * 2^6

1/5 * 1/10^4 + 1/5 * 1/10^6

1/5 * 10^-4 + 1/5 * 10^-6

0.2/10000 + 0.2/1000000

0.000 02 + 0.000 000 2 = 0.0000202

Cancel the 1.623 gives
2 x 10^6 + 2 x 10^4
.............................
10^11

cancel 10^4

gives
2 x 10^2 + 2
.................
10^7
The answer is 2.02 x 10^(-7)

No need for a calculator.
10. Thanks everyone. I could have done that as well

Oh well.

Thanks again.
