US Secretary of State John Kerry says any Iranian action against Islamic State (IS) in Iraq would be "positive".

He would not confirm Pentagon claims that Iran carried out strikes on IS. Iran is not a member of the US-led coalition and denies any co-operation.

Mr Kerry praised the alliance for inflicting "significant" damage on IS, but said IS ideology, funding and recruitment needed to be destroyed.

His comments came after the coalition's first high-level meeting in Brussels.

IS controls large areas of Syria and Iraq, imposing a rigid version of Sunni Islam and persecuting or killing non-believe: Read more.

Discuss: should the USA and Iran put aside their differences and work together to defeat ISIS?

No. As PM Abadi said that when Baghdad was in danger Iran were quickest to react, they helped out their neighbors when Obama was literally busy playing golf.

Iran doesn't need the help from US, Iraqi Army and the volunteers have done pretty well to not only stop Daesh but to push them back most notably regainig Baiji.

Recent victories were never highlighted by the Obama adminstration and the media, they still after every article write, "Iraqi Army can not defeat ISIS, they have low morale [Insert Mosul]"

Mexico believes Iran could defend itself from ISIS, and in doing so, will significantly weaken this terrorist organisation. The US will not need to co-operate as a result.

Canada does not wish to take sides on this matter, but believes the US' shaky history with Iran makes an effective team effort look unlikely.

Japan welcomes further bilateral relations between our good ally America and Iran. We hope to see a mutual agreement than can help all nations prosper and help in dismantling ISIS.

U.S. firepower alone can't defeat the Islamic State. It needs to work with Iran, whether it likes it or not.

Turkey believes the US have to make compromises in the nuclear talks if they want Iran to take part in the coalition. At the moment, Iran are not under any pressure internally to fight ISIS because they face no threats from them.
