I'm starting at New Hall in October, so I guess this query is especially directed at Blissy, but any help from others would also be appreciated. Does anyone know if you're allowed to stay in your college room over the summer if you want to stay in Cambridge to use the UL or whatever?

NO!!!

Why would they let you stay when they could fleece some fat american for a few grand? And really, why would you need the UL if you havent even started yet
Or even if you had started!

I think what foolfarian is trying to say is that the colleges usually use their rooms for conferences etc during the holidays. You have to move out of your room completely. I think you can sometimes have an extra week or two in college though, and i'm not sure how it applies to grad students, who seem to always be around anyway.

However, you are in luck because I stayed in New Hall over summer once. Yes, they do hire out the entire college to American students who are charged twice as much as us and have to share 3 to a room (they think having a 'roomie' is normal. They don't know none of us share.), but there are some college houses in Huntingdon Road/French's road/down the bottom of the garden (Hammond House) which might be free before the new intake of grad students.

Unless you have a real, burningly important reason to stay up, they'll most likely not let you. The summer vac is the only time we're not officially meant to be working our arses off, plus they let out the whole place, so it's very unlikely you'd be able to stay. Not that I'd want to anyway.

it's generally very hard to get official permission to come up before start of term (unless you're a scholar / senior tutor's pet). if you're up for work experience relating to your studies etc it's usually possible. otherwise book a guest room - just as cheap.

Thanks for your help, everyone; seems fairly conclusive. In that case, does anyoe know if you're allowed to borrow books from the faculty library over the vacations?

Yup. Probably all faculties.

Not Engineering but then again Engineers don't read so that's not a problem.

on that subject actually, my family and i are thinking of going down to cam for a couple of days in the summer- they basically wanna see the place before i go down there properly (hopefully). would we be allowed to rent out a couple of college rooms dya think, or would we be better off staying at the travel lodge?

i very much doubt your college would allow you to rent any room before you've matriculated..

I don't think they've finished building the travelodge, so that probably wouldn't be a great idea.

I realise this is a very old and now dormant thread, but I thought I should add somthing seeing as all colleges do not follow the policies listed above. Trinity is happy for anyone to stay up over the long vac so long as you let them know that you are doing so. I and a friend are still up - he is punting for the Granta, and I am working at the UL. The college does reserve the right to make you move rooms (though they can only do this if you are not a scholar), but it is very rare that this will be required.

However, this would not be possible before matriculation. Indeed one would not be allowed into the UL until one had a student card.
Does anyone know whether or not the colleges are likely to be more lenient towards EU and overseas students (ie those of us who have to travel far, and expensively, when going home)?

Yeah at least in Clare they tend to be lenient, you get extra time to make travel arrangements easier for free (I think). There is also going to be 9 month leases for a large proportion of the Clare rooms so you don't need to move out of xmas and easter. Some of the foreign students do seem to stay here all year, I think they have some kind of priority in the summer vac residency applications.

Cambridge is great in the summer, lots of tourists, lots of language students, lots of insects... but it is even more beautiful on the backs!

Alaric.

In Trinity it is much like Clare. There is an unofficial understanding here that international students have some of the benefits of scholars (i.e. we will not be required to leave our rooms, but until sworn in as scholars we don't get their reduced rent rates). I would assume this would work at most colleges, especially if you could show that you had a summer job lined up (this is often possible to get through the college, department, or university).
