Read coverage/Depth DNA Sequencing

I just need quick summary of what is and it's purpose, my understanding:

It seems like it has something to do with sequencing accuracy, I think 5X means the amount of times a nucleotide bp is represented in a particular read

Or the number of times a read has been sequenced ??
