sprinting?

just wondering how fast people on TSR can sprint. I really want to increase my speed as im really slow. I havent timed myself but i reckon it would take me about 16-18 seconds to sprint 100m. Does anyone know what kind of exercise professional sprinters do? i cant imagine that they get such bulky thighs from running all day alone. Surely they must have some kind of weights regime?

p.s sorry if i posted in the wrong place, i just saw a few 'getting fit' threads so thought this might be the place to pose any questions.

At 15/16 I could do the 100m in 12.0.
200 in 25.6

Was county champ in year 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11

I'm 20 now, no way as fit now, i'd need to train hard for a year, but i reckon i could beat them now was i'm slightly taller and more muscular.

Yeah this "actually" is the forum for health and relationship but these days its becoming like a "sex" forum.. n e ways
You want to increase your sprinting speed?
Search through this forum and ul find many threads related to exercises. Go to www.bodybuilding.com or www.maxmuscle.com or something similar. or even www.teenbodybuilding.com
Ul find loads of information.
My advice for u is to keep ur carb content in ur diet very high and more exercises for legs

Yeah, sprinters work out with weights. You don't get a body like Linford Christie, for example, without heavy weights workouts. He can bench 300lbs+.

Anyway, as for my sprinting... it's pretty poor. I'm in great cardiovascular shape, but I just can't sprint fast.
I used to be able to sprint just under 12 seconds ish for 100m, though my speciality was 400m which i got down to a PB of 53.9 a few years back, since then ive lost a lot of my enthusiasm for athletics so I havent done it as much, but heres my 2 cents worth anyway

Sprinting is a very natural thing. If you can only sprint 100m in 15 seconds now, you never gonna get down below 12 seconds (assuming of course youve stopped growing, if you're like 13 years old or something then of course its different). Leg speed can be difficult to increase, however it is possible, and you can shave time off by building up more leg muscles which will aid you in acceleration a lot more. Eat a lot of carbohydrates when training, with some protein too (protein shakes if you really want to get into it, but dont get hooked on bodybuilding or anything).

If you really want to get better at sprinter, powerlifting will serve you a lot better than bodybuilding.

Basically, train like a powerlifter and eat like a bodybuilder, and your sprinting ability should get better.

300lbs? what about asafa powell? i can bench about 140lb for one rep max. i just cant squat very much at all, and i think i need to organise a better weights shedule for my legs.

I have no idea, I just remember reading in an interview with FHM once that he could bench 300lbs, which is pretty good.

As for your legs, the only exercise you need is squats. Seriously.

yea in year 9 i was able to do it in about 11.59 100m that is but that was probly my PB and the fastest i'd ever done it. Now i've put on weight and can't really do it that fast probly like 13 seconds which is very very bad considering i was really good.

You sound like my mate Gaz. He was one of the best distance runners in the country when he was in his teens. He was the best in Hampshire. Guys he was regularly beating with ease now represent Britain in the Olympics, where junk food and beer have taken their toll on him over the years.

Same here GMan. Was well fast, beat every lad in my county. Timed at 12.0 at a stadium (200 & 400 were my events).

Turned 17, got distracted by women, beer and cars. Lol!
100m in 5.3 minutes. The last 85 metres always got me.

Indeed. Some people just have the genetics for it. I reckon you could've got your 100m down to as little as 4:30.

I have no idea. I've never timed myself. I doubt particularly fast, since I'm not particularly tall, thus my legs aren't particularly long.

I did 100m in 11.6 when I was 17, but that wasn't particularly competitive in the under 20s. When I was 13 I could do 12.1, which was pretty good at the time! Haven't properly trained for years though, I was mainly a sprint hurdler and I had an accident doing a race at Loughborough (a particularly hard track) and haven't raced since :frown: Might try a bit this year, meant to be helping coach a friend who's starting to try hurdling.

I agree to a certain extent but 12 seconds isnt too challenging, sure 15 seconds is very slow but a bit of sprint training can work wonders.

I ran it in 11.3(s) when i was in highschool. (not in school, because there timing isnt exactly accurate!)

VERY brief outline of a pro sprinters work out, 6/7 days a week training,(more depending on person.)

2/3 or more days in the weights room, mainly olympic lifts, plyometrics, endless technqiue work. Keeping a Specialised diet, taking supplements. etc etc

Sprinting is hard but they say 'sprinters are born and marathon runners made.'
