Merton

Just discovered this forum today (it seems nice and friendly!) but was a bit worried to read someone reassuring someone else that st hilda's is near merton and magdalen, 'not that you'd want to hang around merton'.
I've got an offer for this year to do maths and philosophy at merton... will I live to regret my college choice? Now I need the reassurance, there'll be cool people at merton too, right?

To be honest, I know little about Merton, I've never visited it etc etc, but I've only ever heard of Merton as being the most academic college out of all the Oxford colleges and therefore all the people that go there are very consciencious, hardworking, dedicated to their studies etc etc, but mind you, half these stereotypes about oxbridge colleges don't seem to have any truth in them!!

Yes it would be wrong to generalise, that's what they do in Cambridge

I know very little about Merton as well, in fact I've never met anyone from there but your college is what you make of it - and there's always opportunities to meet people from other colleges....

Merton Street is beautiful. Also very handy for philosophy library

Ok, I should clear things up, that comment was in jest, it certainly wasn't serious.

Merton is know to be exceptionally academic, and therefore it attracts a certain type of students: hardworking, dedicated, ect. Which isn't a bad thing, all Oxford students are dedicated to their degree, you have to be to survive. What I would say is that Merton is probable the only college you could go to at 9pm and find the bar closed. Why? They’re all working...

And don’t believe stereotypes, most of them are made up in others colleges JCRs for comic value and gain cult status.

I have also been given a conditional offer to do Maths & Stats in Merton. But I only made an open application and Merton becomes my college choice. What else is Merton famous for except academic excellence?

In my opinion Merton is an excellent college. If you would really like to know more about it, the best person to contact is probably tagzt, as he is going there.

If Magdalen is the heart of Oxford, Merton is its brain.

and pem*broke* is the arse

Merton is lovely. There's a lot of academic pressure - both from the tutors and peer pressure - but that's not to say everyone there does nothing but work. You don't get entire colleges of nerds...

Thanks everyone, just reread my post and it did seem a bit silly to listen to random jokes anyway, was feeling tired and generally nervous about leaving home etc.
But after a hideously boring day at school it all seems far better than a-levels, whatever it's like, and I met loads of nice-seeming people at interviews, so hopefully at least some of them will have got in!
Back to do some revision to ensure that I get the grades to get in...

I 've just noticed these forums and thought I should reply as I'm a 1st year PPEist at Merton. Merton is, on the whole, great and it really is very academic and hard working. I've literally been to the bar at 9:00 and found no-one there on many different occaisions! Also, it's very good for maths&philosophy and the current M&P 1st year is amazingly clever and a total legend.

How about the accommodation and other facilities like computer and sports?
