Just discovered this forum today (it seems nice and friendly!) but was a bit worried to read someone reassuring someone else that st hilda's is near merton and magdalen, 'not that you'd want to hang around merton'.
I've got an offer for this year to do maths and philosophy at merton... will I live to regret my college choice? Now I need the reassurance, there'll be cool people at merton too, right?

I have a place at Merton too, to do Maths. I think I remember you from interviews. Blonde hair, right?

Anyway, the students that I spoke to at Merton seemed cool. Slightly geeky, possibly, but I suppose you have to be to be going to Oxford in the first place.

Merton is, on the whole, great and it really is very academic and hard working. I've literally been to the bar at 9:00 and found no-one there on many different occaisions!

Arse. I'm not a particularly hard worker. I expect the work to be a fair bit harder than A-Levels, but is there really a significant difference between Merton and other colleges in terms of pressure and workload?
As for the bar, please tell me this isn't true. I'm really hoping that, if I come next year, i'm not going to be holed up with a load of bookworms.

I wouldnt mind going to a very academic college. I dont think I'll be going to the bar often, if at all. I usually refrain from all sorts of alcoholic revelry.

Wanna exchange places? I have an offer to read Maths from Magdalen....

Or on second thought.....naaa. Magdalen is just too beautiful!

hmm..not so sure about that
The bar thing really is true, I'm afraid. I don't know anything about sports because I don't do any. Computing facilities are fine - there're ethernet connections in all rooms and a 24 hour computer room. Accomadation is also fine - the college accomadates you for the duration of your course although 2nd years live on Holywell Street which is a 5 min walk from college.

Is there much inter-college social mixing in terms of visiting other college's bars and suchlike. Are students free to roam other Oxford colleges?

Surely not every night though?

Mmm... not really, no. In theory, you're only allowed into other college bars as a guest (for most colleges), and although that's frequently ignored, it's not always. There's certainly not much in the way of randomly wandering into bars and chatting to people there.

Don't forget, guys, Merton's bar isn't closed at 9pm. It's just sometimes empty.

Ethernet? How about internet?

Does the accommodation fee include heat and electricity?

 Sorry for asking so many questions as I have never been to Oxford.
(I come from HK and Oxford sent tutors there to interview applicants.)
The ethernet is just the college's high-speed network that allows internet access from your room - and it's free. Electricity and heating are free up to a certain point and you get charged for going over the limit (I don't know what this limit is). As ThePants999 (i.e. Chris  ) says, the bar is not closed at 9:00 but is often empty. I'd advise potential Mertonians to get involved with university societies (like OULC  ) to meet people from other colleges.

luckily merton isnt the college ive got an offer from!! thank god (no offence anyone) just it sounds like my worst nightmare! I know for DEFS that I would have rejected them if they gave me an offer! omg sorry but it sounds like such a well..

If you're so bothered about the bar being empty at times that it would affect your choice of college you may have chosen the wrong university altogether. Merton probably isn't as different as some make out. It does seem one of the best colleges in terms of giving its students a good deal. I suspect the number of people who decline places is very, very small.

I'd disagree with that - as college bars go, it is almost unheard of for them to be empty at 9pm on any day of the week. Oxford students actually have a bit of a reputation for excess drinking.

That was secondary to my main point but I've been in plenty of college bars midweek that haven't been throbbing with drunken revelry. I can't say I have been in any that have been empty and that includes Merton - although I can quite believe that it could be.

Nothing yet. I'm sure it'll come soon enough. I have friends with offers from other colleges (studying maths), some have received more info, some haven't.
