Phuket or the Maldives?

Hello,

I was thinking of going on holiday next summer with a few mates, but I'm in a dilemma as to whether we should visit the Maldives or Phuket. I have never been to that area of the world so I don't know much, but I wanted to know which of the two would you lot recommend.

Which one would be relatively cheaper, more beautiful, more activities, better people, food and etc.

Any helpful response would be much appreciated.

If i was in your situation i would just say - **** it, lets go to Phuket.
The Maldives definitely isn't somewhere you'd want to go on a mates holiday. It's amazingly beautiful and relaxing, but there's really nothing to do there. Also it's realllllly expensive - I'd NEVER be able to afford it as a student!

maldives but you may get bored as there is nothing to do other than dive and lounge on a beach. Also check the weather...

Now I don't know but I know what my boyfriend would say...Phuket. I'm going there this new year

So the Maldives is more appropriate for couples?

I've done some research, and Phuket is certainly cheaper (although its further in geographical difference), and there does seem to be more activities, and I'd feel better because I would be contributing to the local economy after the events of last year, but, the pics of the Maldives are so much more attractive then Phuket. I am not dissing Phuket, it looks gorgeous, I would be lucky to go there, but Maldives looks like heaven on earth.

to tell you the truth i've never been to maldives, but it seems like a honeymoon place, haven't heard of anyone that goes there for fun with friends, but maybe that is just me. i agrre with you though, that maldives look amazing, i don't think it is as exploited by tourists as phuket is either.

phuket is a good place, the people are nice, it is cheap, there are many things to do and there are probably a lot of other tourists and backpackers there so if you want to meet new people phuket is a good choice. btw, the food there is wonderful.
puket purely for the teacher that you bring back saying something funny about the F word teehee

Phuket

Much better choice.
And form Phuket you can travel to Koh Phi Phi like i did.
Thats where they made the movie "The Beach" staring Leo.

And the sand there is really, white !!!
hi guys..i am from maldives..i would like to give an honest suggestion...it is really expensive here...but it is a beautiful country at the same time...you decide what to do then...:-D
I have only been to Phuket and it is really nice. The best thing there is the shopping! Thai food is also absolutely amazing! The beaches aren't the best in Thailand, but they are nice. The only bad thing is the nightlife - there are tonnes of sleazy old men looking for gorgeous young Thai brides.

Everything is really, really cheap!!!

Cant believe its taken this long for someone to say that! Phuket is grossly over developed and very sleazy, and most of the beaches arent even that nice. If I were you I'd get a flight to Bangkok and go to the islands elsewhere in Thailand. If you're going in the summer look into Koh Phang-Nga, Samui and Tao. They are all in their sunny season then. As a rule of thumb Phang-Nga is for parties, Samui is touristy, Tao is more laid back and nicer, and known for diving (although its getting more popular now)

If you're going with friends Phuket is great fun, maybe I was doing it a disservice earlier, but almost every other Thai island is nicer in terms of scenery.

Dont know anything about the Maldives, sorry.
This thread is three years old! I was going to post a similar response to Cortez but I am 3 years too late!! Wonder where the OP went in the end.

Well if you are going away with a bunch of lads Phuket is 100% your destination. Patong is the party/ gogo area. Really good laugh there - lots of bars and well an eye opener for anyone but the most hardened traveler.

Thing is like all thai islands - the busy party areas are commercial with lots of bars, not a particularly great day area, beach will be crowded and touristy. However if you hire a moped and go round the island you'll find the true thailand- beautiful empty beaches, great people amazingly good and cheap food.
