Edge Hill or Hope?

Hi everyone,

Looking for a bit of advice or words of wisdom from anyone who is currently studying (or has completed) their PGCE.

I've recently received offers to study the PGCE course at both Edge Hill and Liverpool Hope. I did not expect to be lucky enough to be in this situation and now I'm totally torn as to where to pick :s-smilie:

I think I preferred Hope on the day for some reason- got a better vibe from it and the staff really sold the course (they were very passionate and enthusiastic). It's also better location wise.

However, the Edge Hill course is a Maths specialist course. I know that most Primary PGCEs offer a specialism but this seems to go beyond that. I can't help but wonder if a strong subject specialism will give me a better standing in the job hunt as an NQT? I also worry that Edge Hill has a better reputation,

Anyone tell me what sorts of factors are most important to consider when choosing a PGCE provider? Or any experiences of studying at either of these unis that that can be shared?

Hello Louboutin! I was just wondering what decision you made regarding Edge Hill v Hope as I have found myself in exactly the same position. I think I am wavering towards Edge Hill because of its specialisms and reputation but I'm concerned about the amount of travelling I might end up doing if I go there. I have two children and know that the PGCE year is going to be tough enough as it is but equally don't want to lose employment opportunities by passing up a better course. What was best for you in the end?

I went to Edge Hill (although I did an undergraduate teaching degree - secondary ICT). I loved my time there and really liked the campus (although I left in 2007 and it has changed drastically since then!). I did a further degree at another university afterwards (unrelated subject) and couldn't help but compare them - I felt Edge Hill was far more organised, friendly etc.

But...

To be honest, I really don't think it matters which one you choose; I have never had comments about where my degrees have come from - my employers etc. have only ever wanted to check that I actually have the qualifications I have listed on my CV.

The PGCE is a tough year, so I think it needs to be a decision based on practical issues such as travel, associated costs, etc.

When I went to Edge Hill, it involved moving from London; I had offers from both there and universities nearer to home (Roehampton and St Mary's, Twickenham, for example). I found it helpful to visit for the day and just see where 'felt' right. I found that Edge Hill was the one that felt right for me, but I think it's something unique to you. If you have children you need to think about how travelling either university will affect childcare arrangements, school runs, travel times and the costs associated with these).

The universities sometimes run taster days - these might be helpful too.

Good luck with it all

Thanks Muinteoir. Think you might have sealed it for me. I've had few people who've done PGCEs at Hope recommend that I go to Edge Hill so the fact you had a positive experience there as well is nudging me more towards Edge Hill. Thanks for the advice.
