How skanky? Am I over reacting?

I have a problem with my flat mates, I'm in no way a clean freak! But I think they can be really skanky. For a start they n-e-v-e-r take the bin out (two of them actually don't know where the rubbish shoot is) and when it gets full they think it's ok to just put stuff on the floor around the bin. And it is'nt just like, packaging, they'll leave stuff that rots like an apple core and there was a piece of cake the other day. WTF? I have to ask, do they live like this at home? You can't leave rotting **** on the kitchen floor. Am I over reacting or is it as skanky as I think. And how do I tell them without sounding like some bossy freak?

That's gross, my flatmates are a bit like that too. They never empty the bin, and they never wash anything out before putting it in the recycling, so it's full of smelly unwashed cans. And the sink is full of unwashed dishes. Bleugh.

Who does do that?! The floor or sink or kitchen top is one thing, but you're talking about the bin! That's what it's there for!

I have exactly the same problem with my flatmates. The bin is overflowing, I'm not touching it with a bargepole because it's f**king dripping with sauce, soup and other stuff. Some people have no shame and I'm absolutely sickened by it.

The whole point of recycling is to reduce waste. By rinsing out cans & bottles & taking off labels you reduce even less waste at the recycling plant.

Yeah some of my housemates are gross like that too. Just went into the kitchen to find the remains of their fruit salad from last night still sat in bowls on the table with flies buzzing round. They have actually started removing the bin bags from the bin now (a step forward), but they don't take them outside. I came back from a weekend away on Monday, there were 2 full bin bags sat on our kitchen floor, the bin had a heap of rubbish perched on top and the smell was hideous.

You should definitely wash out cans and bottles before recycling. It's totally disgusting to leave cans there growing mould for weeks on end. I always rinse my stuff out, but the others don't seem to.

Yeah, you just add it to your own waste.... I don't see your point?

Have to go with your flatmates on this one. They're going to clean the recycled stuff when it gets to the plant anyway, whats the point using two lots of water?

OP: That is really gross. Tell them off, but not in a nasty 'what the hell do you think you're doing, don't you know you're living like animals' kind of way. More in a 'you know that we're going to get rats if we don't empty the bins, don't you?' Or, 'OMG I just found maggots on that bit of cake on the floor. I threw it in the outside bin, but ewww, maggots on our floor. And soon they would have been little bluebottles, buzzing round our bedrooms.' Gross them into doing something about it.

if you are any good at acting, scream really loudly when you are alone in the kitchen and jump on the worktop. when they all come running in say, through your hysterics, that you saw a rat. if that doesnt make them clean up then they are seriously skanky *******s!

Don't know how it is everywhere else, but at home, my green recycling bin is only collected once a month. Hence if you leave food and stuff in cans, it stinks to high hell after three weeks. So you give cans and things a quick rinse before you throw them away.

Nah, we have a bin that we empty ourselves, and separate containers for bottles/jars, cans and newspapers/cardboard to be recycled, which are taken by the cleaners once a week. Decomposing food that's been there a week doesn't smell so hot.
