Now, I graduated last July, and Im not in work, nor am I seeking work, Im doing volunteer work but I dont want a proper job. Now my mother wants me to get on down to the job centre for some reason? something to do with National Insurance she said... Now I have no idea why, stuff like this passes me by so can someone explain to me?

Basically, a lot of benefits are dependant on you have enough National Insurance contributions (eg maternity pay). If you're not working, you're not paying NI. If you sign on with the job centre, they know you're attempting to look for work and it counts towards your NI contributiuons.

You may also be eligable for JSA, but check that as you've recently finished uni. And depending on how good they are, they can also offer help and advice on looking for work, including stuff like application forms and CVs

If you aren't looking for work you can't get jobseekers allowance (or your NI paid)

Your mother is probably hoping by going down there you'll actually get a job

sign on and get the dole!! they give you money for doing nothing, it's great!!

seriously, I've no intention to shirk my taxes once I do get a job, so now that I'm unemployed, I'm hardly gonna turn down what I'm gonna be paying for
