ok, so i'm on amoxicillin, started taking it today for a chest/throat infection. I've heard people saying that you're not meant to drink when you're on them, but is that strictly speaking true??

thing is, my parents have been arguing loads recently and tonight i just feel like i could do with a drink. Not a solution, I know, but im quite a regular drinker anyway, so would one hurt??

If it doesn't say on the packet you can't drink then you can drink, if it does say you can't sorry..:frown:

Dont drink. It is true, any form of antibiotic and alcohol do NOT mix. Some say amoxicillin is different, but it may still give you some stomach irritation so ..be moderate if you have to.

You shouldnt drink when on antibiotics, just as a general rule.

Providing it's not metronidazole, alcohol is actually fine with antibiotics.... I just would suggest this is in moderation!

As Joy said, there are only a few antibiotics, including metronidazole, that actually decrease in efficiency by the person drinking alcohol, although it will delay your recovery.

alcohol and drugs (of any kind) DON'T mix. you're better off laying off the drink for a few days, getting loads better and taking up drinking again after. Why do you think anyone would lie about that???
Reply 9
It's more because metronidazole has what is known as a disulfiram-like reaction.... ie you will be sick with alcohol (Disuliram's are used in people who abuse alcohol due to their emetic effect)

Good idea - like I said it's not harmful for you to drink alcohol but it's best not to really, you'll be better in no time!

I've gotta be pedantic; alcohol is a drug. So drugs and drugs don't mix.

Have you considered getting help for your regular drinking? It doesn't sound very good at all.

christ i just mean like, a couple of glasses of wine a night or somethin. nothin major. unlike my lovely father who the other night claimed he hadn't drunk too much. he'd "only had 3 beers and two glasses of wine"
