do guys really look at appearance when dating/going out?

random question, but my friend recently got dumped because (and her boyfriend told her this was the reason' she didn't match his 'look') her boyfriend found someone who was, in his eyes, prettier; and as you can imagine this lead to my friend being very "emotionally traumatised" (-her words not mine)

now i would have thought people wouldn't have taken looks that seriously, but apparently people do...

so to the guys (or girls for that matter) out there, are looks important when it comes to dating?

The initial stages will most likely be based on physical attraction. But after that other factors such as personality will keep a couple together. To dump someone for that reason of going out for a period of time seems like a bit of a cop-out and could well be just an excuse.

Looks as they said are initially important, but personally I quickly find personality being more important and a good personality makes me thinks someone looks better too...

What sort of a question is this? If ANYONE says no then they are lieing. Looks are crucial in actually attracting someone as they don't see your personality from the other side of the room. In terms of this particular scenario, clearly the guy has found an upgrade in terms of looks and a decent personality so he has decided to change.

As already said, in a roundabout way, people that say they dont consider looks an issue are either:

1) Really really really really really desperate
2) Really really really ugly - elephant man ugly (ties in with 1)
3) Really really boring (ties in with 1)
4) Blind

Its true that you have to be attracted to the person but I don't think they need to match your 'look'. I don't think I match my boyfriends look, He's Chinese (but has lived in England all his life), and has a very different style to me, but I still find him really good-looking and vice versa and as do our friends. What i'm kind of trying to say is although we don't match perfectly as a couple he is still really really attractive and I would never dump him because he doesn't quite fit my 'look'.
