did it today, everyone always asks how it wet but the fact is i wouldn't put the answer if i didn't think it would be correct...duh

you work out the length of the sides of the small squares in comparison to the large square using the fact that the small squares are lining up at 45 degrees =2^1/2 times the length
i got 1/3 too (yay)

It was 6 ( i will delete this message in 3 mins)

there was a route from the flat surface up to the verticle surface, crossing over to the other verticle surface (which allows you to cross into the same colour as the one before- thereby allowing you to get to black in even number of moves)
there were 4 routes (2 routes from each side) that led to blacks on the verticle surfaces and 2 routes that led to 2 blacks onthe original surface coming back (i didnt realise this until last second and by then it was too late)

wish i had the diagram to explain better-sorry for confusing wording

Tallying these up I get 99, unless question 18 was actually correct. This is exactly what I got last year (also best in year and best in school) and I sat the Hamilton paper and got a merit with an abysmal score. Hope you all did well and the answers will be on the UKMT website tomorrow probably.
speedy you probably saw the ones that went back to the original surface but not remained on the verticle surface, while i vice versa.
wish i could share info with you during the exam then we wouldve both got it right
lol speedys an year below me and still got exactly the same things wrong as me (:redface:)

= 0.25Y - 0.125X
1.125X=0.25Y
9X = 2Y
X = 2/9 x Y
