Vanadium has four oxidation states, +2,+3,+4 and +5, their colours in water being lavender, green, blue and yellow respectively. The +5 oxidation state is weakly oxidising,, +4 is the most stable in the presence of air, +3 in the absense of air and +2 is a strong reducing agent.
