I want to show a particular poster that I disagree with them without butting heads and drawing out a long winded argument.

No it's the mature way out.

Pressing a button saying you dislike someone's post is pretty pathetic.

I can see advantages to getting negative rep back but I think it's better without it. It's still very easy for people to make it clear that they don't like what you're saying, but purely having positive rep puts the emphasis on rewarding people for helpful or good posts, rather than simply blasting someone with negative rep because you don't agree with them.

We had neg rep
people complained that they were being unfairly neg repped
so the powers-that-be got rid of neg rep
people complained that they wanted neg rep back (because people are apparently never happy)
and now everybody is used to no neg rep, and chances are if it ever came back people would complain that they don't want it back..

'bout sums it up really

That would mean if you were controversial then you would get red, whether you were wrong or not and it would let trolls troll anonymously

It's taken me almost a year to get just 4 gems

If they bring back neg rep then my work will be ruined D:

Negged.
Funny thing is I would have had so many red gems if it weren't for positive rep only. I know many people don't like me but oh well

It doesn't matter what system is implemented by the moderators as there will always be those that complain.

I agree. At the moment, the total number of "likes" a post has is more a function of how many people have seen the post and how strongly it polarises opinion, rather than of the actual quality or helpfulness of its content. It provides no useful incentive and makes a user's gems quite meaningless really.

Pro-tip: If you want a lot of positive rep, choose a controversial subject (e.g. Islam, feminism, whether or not a thumbs down button should exist etc.) and create a thread with a catchy title that really champions one side of the debate, collecting all the rep from people who agree with you. Wait a couple of weeks and then make another post on the same subject, but this time championing the other side of the debate, and collecting all the rep from everyone else.

Yep, rep is completely pointless without negs, may as well just scrap the whole system rather than just negging..

It did have a thumbs down, but a while back the powers-that-be decided that it would be more "positive" to have just thumbs up.

This is why you see some users with red gems instead of green gems - they were thumbed down, or "negged", more than they were thumbed up.
