Hello! We have just been doing our persuasive as well. My topic was: "Are we overly dependent on technology?" and that was really interesting. If that appeals to you, I can give you some good websites!

I don't know if it's any help since I sat higher last year, but I know markers like to read something that's a bit different rather than the usual done to death ones, and I guess that can only work in your favour. Maybe consider doing something a bit lighter. For example, I wrote mine when Skyfall was quite big so I focused on how the franchise had remained so popular for so long. It meant I could chuck in some serious stuff like violence and misogyny while still keeping it light with some puns etc. A friend of mine wrote hers on the existence of man flu!

I got an A1 at Nat 5 last year and my persuasive essay was on The Falklands and whether they are British or Argentinian - it's an interesting topic that lends itself beautifully to being a persuasive topic. It's also very rarely done, if ever.

We were advised to steer clear of topics such as:
Euthanasia
Footballers' Wages
Animal Testing
Size 0 Models
The Independence Referendum/Debate
Prisoners Having the Vote

As these, amongst others, are done so frequently. Hope this helps!

Thank you! Ive decided to do an essay on whether the name 'legal' highs is misleading and creates a false sense of safety in these drugs!

No problem. That sounds like an excellent topic! Clyde 1 had a campaign about legal highs called "a bitter pill" or something like that a while ago - their website may have information that would suit your essay.

I've heard legal highs is a good topic to do, I did mine on the international black market organ trade and whether or not we were doing enough to combat it

That sounds really interesting! I'd thought about that one as well but decided to stick with legal highs!

I did mine on whether the restriction on gay men giving blood should be lifted. But I also did a draft of meritocracy vs. positive discrimination.

I got an A1 in NAT5 last year, and my topic was "Middle Eastern Refugees Are Not Terrorists" to which I got 15/15 on.
Here is a link to it if you are looking for any inspiration on how to write it:
